STAFFS SENIORS VICTORIOUS AGAINST NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

Leek Golf Club once again provided Staffordshire with 3 of its players for the Inter County golf match against the might of Nottinghamshire at Wollaton Park. Notts were last year's Midlands Champions and this season have already won the East Midlands League so we're hot favourites to overcome the present Staffordshire Seniors Team.

Duncan Stott (2 h'cap) once again led from the front and achieved wins in both the morning and afternoon sessions whilst Dave Gallimore and Ross Martin each won one match and lost once match.

The overall match result was a win for Staffs by a 12-6 margin. County Captain Tony Wright commented "This was a big result for Staffs and hopefully we can build on this for next year. The players from Leek Golf Club have done particularly well for us this year"

The next match is at The Manor against Lincolnshire on Wednesday and all 3 of Leeks players have once again been selected to represent the Staffordshire Seniors.

HOLE IN ONE

Congratulations to Geoff Willshaw on achieving his 1st hole in one, and you wouldn't guess where it was - only the 7th hole at Pebble Beach whilst on holiday with his son Jim and grandson Jake.

Captains Newsletter for August 2015

My year as Captain rolls on and the events come and go at such a pace that it's easy to lose track. Last Sunday was my Captain's Day for Men and what a day! a field of 170 requiring play to commence at 7:00, a top score of 41 points, a hole in one, a packed club house for the presentation and to top it all sunshine, which was a particular bonus given that two days earlier a major event had to be rescheduled due to a flooded course. Without wishing to tempt fate I seem to have had the best of a poor summer. (Of course, not in golfing terms, I play equally badly in rain or shine). I take little if any credit for the success of the event which was due to the attention to detail and enthusiasm of others. "Thank you all", especially my family, friends and those who continue to go that extra mile to make events successful and very special. Congratulations to the overall winner Mark Rushton and Ben Stazaker, who holed in one at the 13th (not so unlucky for Ben who won a golf break for four at the Forest of Arden Hotel & Golf Complex). Congratulations to all other prize winners and thanks to all who attended the presentation whether winners or not.

To reach the widest possible audience it was decided to hold the opening ceremony for the new teaching facility on my Captain's Day for Men with a preview on the Saturday. These arrangements worked very well as a side attraction on my big day and an opportunity to try out this long awaited facility. There is no doubt that it is a fitting addition to the facilities of a golf club of our standing and I felt privileged to officiate. It would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the vision and enthusiasm of our Past Captain, Dave Gallimore, for seeing the potential and making it happen. It not only provides a state of the art teaching facility but also an opportunity to play some of the best golf holes in the world through the course simulator. I urge you all to give it a try.

You probably wouldn't have noticed but a discreet private ceremony, overseen by Past President, Ivor Povey, also took place in the evening of my Captain's Day for Men: the scattering of the ashes of our recently departed, dear friend, John Massey, in the garden adjacent to the Millennium Pavilion. He is sorely missed.

Last Wednesday we hosted the Captain's Day for the Staffordshire County Lady Vets who effectively took over the course for the day with tee times from 9:00am till 4:00pm. I was so pleased to be invited starter for this event but must admit that I was equally pleased to retire to the clubhouse following the onset of torrential rain in the afternoon. The event was very successful despite the afternoon rain and I was proud to receive the comments on the condition of our course particularly from the early starters who completed in the dry.

Congratulations to Craig Shave (Professional), Rob Parkes, Duncan Stott and Warren Alcock on winning yesterday's Pro-Am and to Gregg and Jake for making it all happen. There is no doubt that it is one of our flagship events. I was pleased to see its return last year but even more pleased that its future is in safe hands.

As you will no doubt be aware by now that Jen has tendered her resignation and is moving on to pastures new. I am sure you will join me in thanking her for her contribution to the success of the club over the past six or so years and wish her well for the future. In the meantime temporary arrangements are in place and Peter Cordon has taken on the position of interim Bar Manager.

To update you on outstanding matters I can report that the new furniture should be with us in a week or so, revised plans for the proposed buggy store are ready for submission and sketches for the refurbishment of the men's locker room are being drawn up for display with estimated costs.

Till the next time, keep your suggestions coming in.

STAFFORDSHIRE LADY VETS CAPTAINS DAY

Jenny Cordon- Lady Captain of Staffs Vets held her Lady Captains Day at Leek last Wednesday. An amazing number of 158 ladies entered from 24 clubs throughout Staffordshire along with Lady President Lilly Gant. The day started early with Club Captain Mr Trevor Eccleston seeing the first ones off at 8.50 and he continued his role of starter throughout the day until the last ones teed off at 3.40pm. A massive big thank you to Mr Captain. The day started with glorious sunshine and those playing early benefited as it began to rain really heavy from 4.00pm on wards. Jenny provided a well-stocked half way house ably served by Carol Nixon, Lisa Davies, Issy Robinson (who was a star), Marilyn Boulton, Claire Robinson and Karen Griffiths. Leek Golf Club Lady Captain Jayne Baxter helped on the desk with raffle tickets and meals along with Lady Vice Captain Pat Beeson and Janet Wood. Once again a MASSIVE thank you to those ladies. Over £300 was made on the raffle. Food was served throughout the day and we were very well looked after by the bar staff. Another massive big thank you to those ladies.
