LEEK DUO WIN MIDLANDS GOLF TITLE
The 2015 Midlands Seniors Golf Championship was held over the testing Aston Wood Golf course last Wednesday and Leek Golf Club were represented by Staffordshire County players Duncan Stott (2 h'cap) and Dave Gallimore (4 h'cap).
With the top 120 players from all of the Midland Counties contesting for the Individual and Team titles it was always going to be a close finish and that proved to be the case. Duncan's 74 gross score earned him 8th place overall in the individual event and Dave's 78 gross gave him a creditable 25th position. Having finished with a combined aggregate total of 152 Leek Golf Club held the "leaders in the Clubhouse position" for some time but this position came under pressure by teams from Coventry GC, Woodall Spa and Nottinghamshire GC who also returned a score of 152. After an anxious wait Leek Golf Club were declared the Team Champions for 2015 by virtue of a better combined back 9 hole score.
Dave Gallimore commented afterwards "We are thrilled that Leek Golf Club are the Midlands Seniors Team Champions. Duncan played great after a shaky start but his birdie on the very last hole was the difference between winning and losing".

"THE LEEK GOLF EXPERIENCE"
Last week Martin Stevens, a 9 handicapper who is a member at Hazel Grove, became the first golfer to sample the very best that Leek Golf Club has to offer. Martin's son had purchased the VIP package last Christmas and his Red Letter Day had now arrived.
On arrival a special personal message to Martin could be seen on the Club House TV screens welcoming him to LGC as he enjoyed the customary coffee and bacon roll. Following an informal chat with Dave Gallimore, where he outlined the sequence of events for the day, Martin was ready to experience his first ever VIP Trackman session with Club Professional Greg Rogula. "After first talking to Martin about his swing it was important for me to see the results that the Trackman computer software provided in order to make an assessment of his ability" said Greg. "From there we could identify any faults and suggest some changes for Martin to work on".
Martin entered the new state of the art Teaching Academy with a feeling that he was pulling the ball to the left of his intended target. The data provided the evidence necessary for him to understand the relationship between a neutral swing path and his posture. Greg was able to offer a few minor alterations to his address position that may help to alleviate the problem. Martin's first Trackman session ended on a high and full of optimism he was then met by the Past Captain Dave Gallimore for 18 holes of match play golf.
Dave commented "Leek Golf Club hasn't had a VIP package before and I feel that many golfers would really enjoy a chance to sample the very best that we have to offer. I really hope that Martin enjoys his Leek Experience and that he will be kind enough to provide LGC with some feedback at the end of the day to enable the Marketing & Promotions Committee make it even more special".
Martin commented -
"It's a brilliant idea. My son knows that I enjoy playing other courses and since I have retired I have had the time to try and improve my game so the session on the Trackman was quite exciting. Greg is a very personable and likeable guy. He has mentioned a few things that I need to do but we will see how it goes out on the course. The course looks great and the greens look fantastic".
"Martin was receiving 4 shots from the Past Captain and quickly moved into a substantial lead. With 2 gross birdies as well as a nett birdie in the first 5 holes he thought that Greg was the new messiah."
Some very good golf was been played by both players but the conversation turned to his thoughts on "The Leek Golf Experience". When I asked for his comments about the layout of the course he remarked that he liked holes that demanded a good strategy and his favourite holes were the 2nd, the 6th, the 12th and 13th. He did however say that we didn't have any holes that were not enjoyable to play or failed to provide any golfer with a challenge.
"The back 9 provided some spectacular views and Dave's company was good. It's always difficult playing an unfamiliar course for the first time but Dave told me where to hit it and when not to go past the pin. Unfortunately as the match progressed he managed to win a few holes and the closing holes were going to decide the result."
After a very pleasant round filled with good golf and good company our VIP visitor and Dave shared an honourable half. After the customary handshakes Greg approached our VIP guest to determine how he had played. Although very happy with his performance on the course he was invited by our Professional back in to our new Teaching Academy for some fine tuning following his round of golf. This additional session was above and beyond Martin's expectations and reflected very positively what can be achieved when we (Greg) go the extra mile.
It was time to relax and what better place to reflect on the day than on the patio with a couple of pints and a bar meal. The sun was out and our staff were interested to hear Martin's comments on his day out. Martin not only commented on the friendly atmosphere and the quality of the course but also made comparisons with the many other courses that he had visited recently on the corporate golfing circuit. He went on to say "You are right to be proud of your course because it's fantastic. I have had a great day and will come back with some friends in the near future to show them."
If anyone would like any details on the "Leek Golf Experience" please contact Greg who will be only too happy to provide you with the information.
