LADIES OPEN - WEDNESDAY 8th JUNE

The inclement weather did not deter ladies from Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire and Surrey from taking part in our Ladies Open on Wednesday the 8th July 2015. The format was a 4BBB Stableford Competition played off ¾ handicaps. The course was in excellent condition and comments from the visitors were very favourable.

The winners on the day with an excellent score of 40 points were Gill Douce and Angela Peake from Trentham.

Jean Greenhalgh and Teresa Booth from Westwood came in 2nd place with 39 points.

Irene Emms from Newcastle and Karen Griffiths from Leek came in with 38 points placing them 3rd.

On countback in 4th place were Donna Macintosh and Sue Flitt with 37 points.

In 5th place were Alison Smith and Jayne Cooper from Whittington Heath also with 37 pts.

Congratulations and well played to all the winners.

Thanks are extended to Dave Smith for acting as our starter and Lady Captain Jayne Baxter who was in attendance all day. Also a big thank you to all the members and staff who helped to make the day a success. Everyone's help is much appreciated.

Lastly but not least a very big thank you to all the ladies who took part in our Open Competition.

We hope to see you all again in 2016.

STAFFORDSHIRE SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP

This prestigious Championship event was held at Walsall Golf Club last week and saw the best senior players in the County struggle to come to terms with the test that had been set for them.

Leek were represented by Duncan Stott (2 h'cap), Dave Gallimore (4 h'cap) and Ross Martin (5 h'cap) in this event and we were not only trying to become the County Seniors Champion for 2015 but we were also fighting for our places in the County team for next season.

For those that have not played at Walsall I would suggest that it is quite a short course by modern standards with several key "risk and reward holes". In order to make it more difficult the green staff placed many pins in very difficult positions that made two putting a challenge and this was evident in the overall scoring.

From being 8 over par after only 8 holes Duncan recovered well to finish with a creditable 78 gross and an opportunity to reflect on what might have been. If he hadn't lost a ball on the 8th hole he would have been in a play-off to win the title. However, achieving a 5th position overall after a start like he had, showed the character of the player to hang in there when the going gets tough.

Dave started well to be in contention but a 42 back 9 scuppered any chance that he had. An 80 gross dropped him down to 12th place overall. "I deserved better today for how I hit the ball but I had three 3 putts on 5 holes on the back 9"

Ross found it difficult to get going and recorded an 85 gross which was hugely disappointing for him. He has however been selected to play against Leicestershire later in the week at Willesley Park. A sure sign that the County selectors know what a good player he is!

PRO/LADY CAPTAIN CHALLENGE 2

Greg Rogula, Lady Captain Jayne Baxter, Mike Andrews & Jayne Andrews (right)

Tuesday afternoon saw the second challenge to the Lady Captain/Pro team. Mike 'Mr Flamboyant' Andrews and Jayne 'Fledgling' Andrews stepped up to the mark. Great disappointment was expressed as we expected the usual fluorescent pink or lustrous green attire from Mike who had toned down to sky blue for the occasion. Again, nerves were apparent as Greg mounted the tee on the first, only to announce "Perhaps I need a ball!"

Being a mixed partnership we agreed to play off the Men's SI with the ladies being given two curtesy shots. All sorted and 29 shots being our challenge, Greg launched into the first three holes with pars on each. The fourth saw Mike stroke a lovely chip onto the green from a wayward drive right and two putt for 4/3 matching Greg's chip on from the left with a single putt to follow. I actually got onto the card at last on the fifth, parring the hole with a shot to win.

The sixth was eventful as the ladies stood in awe of the length of drives from both men. However, Greg's went right into the trees which he chipped back onto the fairway. Mike's landed just short of the far right bunker and positioned nicely to fly onto the green. Unfortunately his second shot, enthusiastically hit, went left and reached the 'out of bounds' limit. Greg proceeded to land his third shot three metres left of the pin (beautiful shot). His first putt teetered on the edge of the hole, so parring the hole which meant my straight forward par wasn't needed! (5 up) All change on the 7th & 8th as Mike hit back winning both. A lovely recovery shot from the bunker on seven and single putt to par/net birdie on eight to reduce the damage to 3 up. Jayne battled on bravely making some encouraging shots. Unusually, I had a shot on the 9th and won the hole with 4/3.

The tenth saw a very fine putt down the green from Mike, perfectly weighted to the hole - top level to bottom - to halve with a par by Greg. Over the carpark now and into completely unknown territory for Jayne! "I have only played seven before" she said! My reply - "You're in for a treat then". With Mike's shot & Greg's par the 11th was halved too. Unfortunately a wayward drive into the thick rough saw the challengers concede the 12th hole as Jayne valiantly struggled on. Back to 5up. A good drive on the 13th by Jayne wasn't needed as Mike proceeded to par the hole with a shot - net birdie to win.

Then came the 14th tee and the view I'd promised Jayne didn't disappoint. Not a little daunted, she addressed the ball and launched it over the rough down onto the cut stuff below. The beaming smile, delight and joy was reward enough. It's those moments which draw us back time and again to this wonderful game. Greg & I both messed up our shots to the green and Mike took advantage winning 5/4, back to 3 up. The 15th saw Greg do battle with the trees but after a good recovery shot to the green he was able to match Mike to halve the hole - dormy 3. The 16th was to be the final hole, halved by Mike as Greg's near-miss putts struck again.

Thoroughly enjoyed by all, though weary, we made our way to the 19th for the usual bevy. Shot of the day was thought (after deep discussion) to be Mike's bunker shot on the 7th. (For me though it was Jayne's tee shot on 14th! A delight.)

If you'd like to take up the enjoyable challenge (any combination of team), book a time in the Pro's shop (£10pp to Lady Capt.'s Charity) and see if you can beat us!

Jayne, L.C.

GOLFING NEWS

MAGNIFICO!-A RARE FEAT INDEED!

Call it "Groundhog Hole". Renato Paratore entered the record books at the French Open on Friday 3rd July by becoming the first player in the 43-year history of the European Tour to record the same score-a four- on EACH of the 18 holes. The Italian teenager did not realise his feat until he was in the recorder's hut. There have been approximately 700,000 rounds played on the European Tour, underlining how rarely this happens. "It is strange," the highly-rated 18 year old said. "On my last hole, (a par five) I wasn't aware of it and I sunk a birdie putt of four metres. Then I discovered I had fours on every hole and it was easy to read. I even took a photo of my scorecard" Paratore parred all eleven par-fours, birdied all four par fives, and bogeyed all three par-threes. The absurdity of his round is probably best gauged by the fact that the hole lengths varied from 175 yards to 607 yards.

AMATEUR GOLF SHOOTS A 57 INCLUDING - THREE HOLES-IN-ONE!

When 59-year old American amateur golfer Patrick Wills struck his tee shot at the 187-yard par three at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Virginia USA, he had already had a remarkable day. The former marine, on his way to a round of 57, had already had holes-in-one at the par-four seventh and tenth when he hit his five iron into the green at 14. "When we got to the green I looked down and I don't even know what I felt-I was dumbfounded," said Wills. "I don't know if I broke out in joy such was the disbelief. It was unreal." The odds of achieving two holes-in-one in a single round are approximately 67 million to one, and the odds on three are well into the billions. In fact Wills, who plays off a handicap of plus four had previously scored 22 aces in 47 years of playing.
