INTER-CLUB FRIENDLY

Brocton Hall GC vs. Leek GC
Saturday 18th April 2015

Captain Trevor Eccleston took charge of twenty-four keen and enthusiastic golfers, when they visited Brocton Hall GC on Saturday. This was the first leg of a double header against a well-respected club, whose course condition was anticipated to be just ahead of Leek's, with a sincere warm welcome from Brocton.

Both teams were playing for the Brian Baker/Frank Cutts Claret Jug, a trophy going back to the mid-eighties, and currently in Leek's possession.

Despite a few late cry-offs, Leek had assembled a solid number of players, including some newcomers to this fixture, but thanks must be extended to all who played, and for supporting the club in this way. This type of fixture is to be a regular feature throughout the year, home or away, and can be such a rewarding experience for all concerned.

A lot of the results were not decided until the final hole or two, and others were equally close, but Leek ended up losing 9-3 to Brocton, who certainly made the most of home advantage. There are too many names to mention, but 'well done' to George Tatton and Dave Weaver, Ross Martin and James Hutchinson, and Andy Baxter and Dave Gallimore for coming out on top in their respective games.

We will certainly have to work hard on the reverse fixture on Saturday 8th August, but a good victory is not insurmountable.

What is undeniable is that the positives resulting from this kind of event seals friendships, allows old rivals to get together, and creates goodwill between two clubs from different parts of the county. Thanks again to all who took part, despite the result.

Vice-Captain

Mixed Fours: Newcastle v Leek Friendly: Sunday 19th April

Sunday the 19th April saw the annual get together of our social, mixed pairings at Newcastle G.C. No shortage of teams signed up (11 in all!), but unfortunately for Ursula, now in plaster, this was not to be and we wish her well in her recovery. This popular fixture was started some 14 years ago by Ann Cockersole in her Captaincy year and still thrives.

Led out by Mr President, the remaining 10 teams did battle over a noticeably changed course by the addition of new pathways and re-located tees to baffle some of us. The quickened greens kept many guessing, though not all, as Andrew (Baxter) sank putts from all directions and all lengths much to the dismay of Margaret (El Fakhri) and Tommy (Hanley a virgin to mixed golf) our opponents.

Over a very wholesome meal of roast beef and bread & butter pudding, bets were nearly taken as to the outcome, as the results swung to and fro in each team's favour. Both Lady Captain and Mim Close (Newcastle's organiser) kept their information close to their chests (excuse the pun!) while others sought to take sneaky peeks at the paperwork.

After a warm welcome by Mr Ray Heath (N/C Captain), Mr Lincoln Boulton (President) responded with thanks for his welcome and hospitality and announced a very friendly 5-5 Draw!!

Thanks must go to all who played and represented Leek G.C. If you missed this fixture and would like to join in, please read the Mixed Noticeboard in the corridor for information. At the moment the next friendly is at Trentham Park on Friday 29th May, so sign up.

STAFFORDSHIRE PGA STROKEPLAY

I entered the Staffordshire PGA Individual Strokeplay event this year at Little Aston hoping to finish in the top 16 to qualify for the Matchplay at Walsall later in the year.

After a First round of 80 (+8) I thought that was it but I managed to have a good second round of 67 (-5) to finish 8th and qualify for the Matchplay.

SANDWELL PARK PGA ALLIANCE

The final winter alliance was held at Sandwell park and, after a good start, I ended up with a bad round of 29pts however the team score of 82 finished 2nd helped by Steve scoring a 4 pointer and also my Dad scoring two 4 pointers (unheard of).

Thanks to Steve Matthews, Ralph Harrison and John Rogula for their support.
