PRO'S COMMENTS

I would like to send a personal thank you to all Leek members for welcoming me to their club, I have only been here for 2 weeks and everybody has made me feel at home, I have really enjoyed meeting everybody. I am sure this is the beginning of something special as I look to helping Leek Golf Club to move forward in the future.

I would also like to thank you for taking up the opportunity of FREE lessons during my first week and I hope you have all learned something new.

If you are interested in playing golf or even wish to try a "taster session" just call in at Leek Golf Club and speak with Greg Rogula or Jake Scragg or ring 01538 384767 (opt. 3).

STAFFS PGA ALLIANCE (LITTLE ASTON)

LGC entered the 1st PGA Alliance of the year at Little Aston Golf Club and unfortunately it was a disappointing start for myself as I only managed 31 points, with the team scoring 75 points, despite the scores we all had a very enjoyable day.

I would like to thank my team - Mr Captain (Dave Gallimore), Lincoln Boulton and Dunc Stott for supporting the event and I look forward to playing with them in the future (if they will have me).

THE SENIOR'S CAPTAIN HOLES IN ONE

Leek Golf Club hosted a pre-season tournament for their Senior members last Friday and their Senior's Captain achieved an ace at the 11th hole. Syd Birch aged 75 from Cheddleton hit his ever reliable 5 wood into the heart of the undulating green and watched it swing to the right before disappearing from view moments later. "Syd had only had a lesson from Leek Golf Club's Professional Greg Rogula on Monday so it obviously pays dividends to try and improve your swing whatever your age" said Club Captain Dave Gallimore. Syd's playing partners Alan Thorpe and Brian Smith congratulated him on his shot of a lifetime and remarked "golf is a wonderful game to get into and allows us all to share experiences like this with our friends. You never know it might be my turn next week".

If you are interested in playing golf or even wish to try a "taster session" just call in at Leek Golf Club and speak with Greg Rogula or Jake Scragg or ring 01538 384767 opt 3

JENNY CORDON COMPETES IN PORTUGAL

I took part in the 22nd Amateur Portuguese Senior Ladies Competition held in Vilamoura at the end of January. This was my 5th year that I have entered. There were 114 players who took part in this years comp over 4 categories.

In the 4bbb I played with Gill Snelson, formally of Leek and we played at The Victoria and we came 8th out of 27 pairs in category one

In the singles which was played at the Old Course over two rounds I came 11th net and 14th gross in category two (6.1 - 12.0) out of 29 ladies. There are prizes for the best two for gross and net in all categories. It is a great competition to play in especially at the time of year. The weather was good and you get to play with ladies from all over Europe.

SOCIETY VISIT TO LGC

At Leek Golf Club we hold many Golf societies and try to make their experience as enjoyable as possible, so we have decided to put a Society section in our newsletter as we couldn't help ourselves taking a picture of the "PINK" man who came with a visiting society on Friday 7th March. If any member can beat this you will also be included.

NEW MEMBER'S CORNER

As Club Captain I would like to introduce you to some of our new members to our golf club. Pictured below is Wayne Mills a welder from Cheadle and Brian Townsend a builder also from Cheadle, with one of our members Karl Upton. These guys have joined with friends Mark Allcock a painter and decorator from Kingsley and Lee Bowers who is a "Paddy McGuiness" look a like who comes from Cheadle.

The gentlemen have recently decided to join us from BarlastonGolf Club because they say "we want to play golf 3 or 4 times a week throughout our 12 months of membership". "We have been visiting the course over the winter months when Barlaston has been shut and the greens are great" says Mark. "It is hoped that all of the players will settle in very quickly and get to know what a friendly Club we are. I am confident that our members and our staff at LGC will always go out of their way to make them feel most welcome" said the Captain.

PRO / CAPTAIN CHALLENGE

On Monday, Greg and Dave took on Karen Wilshaw and Ralph Harrison in a 4BBB match in aid of "The Captain's Charity". The weather conditions were favourable and the course conditions were very good which resulted in a very low scoring game. Karen was to receive 17 shots from Greg and Ralph 9. Below is a copy of the match report which was provided by "Sky Sports".

A photo above of Ralph Harrison and Karen Wilshaw before the start of their epic match

The 1st hole was a non descript affair with pars made by all players. The 2nd hole saw the team of Wilshaw/Harrison move 1 up when Ralph holed from 4 feet. This was a lead that would be held until the 10th Hole which Greg managed to birdie following a great punch shot from under the trees by the 150 marker post. "It was a relief to get the honour on the tee bearing in mind that Greg had had to birdie the 4th from 20 feet and the 5th from 30 feet to secure halves against formidable opponents". The back nine was up for grabs and the Pro/Captain were definitely up against it even though their better ball score of 4 under looked impressive on paper. At this point the pairing of Wilshaw/Harrison was 5 under par.

The 11th saw great tee shots by both Greg and Dave leaving good birdie chances. Ralph hit a powerful thinned, pulled cut shot which caught the branches on the left before careering onto the green below the hole but some 40 feet away from the hole. "Great shot" smirked the Pro under his breath. Minutes later Ralph was smiling after his 3 nett 2 to win the hole after the opponents failed to convert their birdie chances. The levelling of the scores had only lasted for 1 hole. "We are in a bit of trouble now with all of their shots to come" said the Captain to Greg who was looking anxious. The 12th and 13th were halved and the match moved to the 14th with the Pro/Captain partnership 1 down. The Captain once again had to make his shots count on the 14th and 15th if they were to remain undefeated. A drive and rescue saw the Captain on the very back of the 14th needing to 2 putt to win the hole. This was achieved after nervously holing out from 3 feet to level the scores again. The 15th was a similar script with the Captain hitting the green in 2 and 2 putting from 20 feet to move 1 up. This was the first time that the Pro/Captain team had had the lead and they perhaps expected their opponents to fold under the pressure.

The 16th was won when Wilshaw/Harrison struggled to manage a safe route to the green which meant that the score was 2 up and 2 to play and the Pro would remain undefeated a little longer. When Karen had to play the 17th from the Ladies tee some 70 yards behind where we were hitting from I thought that she would not be a dangerous opponent on this particular hole. This was probably even more probable when Ralph bunkered his tee shot going for the "big one". Greg drove his tee shot to the right of the green and the Captain in position "A" just short of the green. Karen then took out her 2 rescue wood and from 170 yards knocked the "shot of the day" to 12 feet. "It was a fantastic shot" said the Captain and Karen replied that the rescue was the best £6.99 that she had spent. Neither Greg nor Dave managed to birdie the hole so the deficit had been reduced to 1 and the game was still alive.

The 18th saw Karen and Ralph both receiving shots and after 4 good drives the chances of the game finishing all square were increasing. Ralph hit the green but was along way fro the pin and maybe leaving the door open for the Pro/Captain pairing to secure the win that they craved. Ralph rolled it to 3 feet whilst after watching the Pro 3 putt the Captain failed to get the birdie from 15 feet. It was all on Ralph from 3 feet to halve the match. Firmly into the centre of the hole and it dropped. "What a great match it was to play in" commented all of the players. With scores of 8 under nett for the Wilshaw/Harrison pairing and 6 under nett for the Pro/Captain it was a memorable day for everyone involved. "They played great" said Greg who immediately sent out a challenge to all members "take on the challenge and see if you can beat us, all of the proceeds go to the Captain's Charity, just arrange a date with Jake and we will be there".

PRO'S MATCH COMMENTS

I must add this short piece about the match. My partner Mr Captain has been suffering with a back problem recently but due to the challenge match being for Charity decided to play with a restricted back swing on the day. After parring the 1st he left himself a little chip and run on the 2nd which he tells me he normally plays with an 8 iron. He suddenly realises, with his head in his hands, that he has left half of his clubs at home (I believe he qualified for the Seniors this year). From this point on he is trying to leave shots that do not require 4, 6 or 8 iron.

As we get round to the 9th, as he doesn't have his 6 iron, he attempts to "choke" down on a 5 iron when unbelievably the head comes off, leaving him with another Club down. This leaves him with Driver, 4 wood (which he never uses), 2 rescues, 7 iron, 9 irons and his wedges, he compared this to Chelsea having two men sent off and then losing their Manager at the weekend.

His best shot of the day was when he pushes the club head back onto the shaft and informed his playing partners to be aware in case it comes off during his swing. He then proceeded to knock it onto the 11th green leaving him a 15 ft birdie putt.

I took this opportunity to inform the Club Captain that there is a vast array of good quality Clubs in the shop if he wishes to purchase.
