Golf on Tour

Golf's back on UK soil

When Sergio Garcia won The Masters in 2017, every headline was along the lines of ‘Finally!’. More than three years later, his win at the PGA Tour’s Sanderson Farms Championship marks his first win since and prompted many similar headlines. Although, did you know both victories involved Sergio putting with his eyes shut at impact?

On the European Tour, Tommy Fleetwood looked to cap the return of the big names at the Scottish Open, a Rolex Series event, with a victory. But fellow Englishman Aaron Rai upset the odds to beat Fleetwood in a playoff that saw Tommy miss from a couple of feet at the first playoff hole.

Both storylines demonstrate the importance of putting well when the pressure's on. So, if you struggle with holing out or three-putt too many times due to poor distance control, send us a message below and we'll be happy to help.

Members' news

A fond farewell...

We would like to wish Andrew and Andrea Martin all the best in the future as they head to Villa Martin, Spain this Sunday to retire in the sun.

They have been valued members of Leek Golf Club for 20 years and have made lots of good friends. Andrea's brother Ian Pugh had a few things to say about them going.

 "They have had an apartment in Spain for over 15 years, and are finally making the decision to realise a lifetime ambition of retiring in the sun.

Really proud of them for following their dream and I am sure it will be fantastic. From a selfish perspective (wouldn't expect anything different) we are hoping that next year's annual golf and business trip can go ahead (covid allowing) as I have already made plans for my sister to return to the UK when all the boys come out to play ?????. 

The good news for the rest of LGC members is that the rounds on the course should be a lot quicker now that we're all not having to follow Mr Martin on a Sunday morning!!

Just more thing to add, my last game vs Andy resulted in a victory for me (again). The last game vs Andrea (my sister) was a victory for her, I look forward to the rematch in Spain someday"

Jacobs Progress

Members of Leek Golf Club, this is just a quick update on my recent tournament performances. From 23-25th September I competed in the PGA National Assistants Championship at Oakmere Park in a field of 120. The format was two rounds then a cut, top 40 and ties progressing to the final round.

On day one, I scored 70 (-2) playing really solid and could have been a lot better. I ended up tied 6th after the first round and two shots off the lead in tricky conditions. 

 Looking to produce something similar on day two to keep myself in contention, it wasn’t the second the round I was looking for. Playing similar but gathering zero momentum then some misfortune coming on the 13th hole. Hitting a sprinkler head with my 2nd shot which looked all over the flag, lead to a lost ball and resulting in an 8 (quadruple bogey) This put me at +8 for the day and right on the cut line. Finishing with 5 pars I managed to make the cut on the number and lead to an early start for day 3. 

On the final day in tricky conditions where the wind was gusting up to 40mph at times. My game plan was to see how many places I could climb up the leaderboard.  I managed to climb up from tied 40th to tied 18th will a level par (72) final round on a day where only one person shot under par.

Next up on my schedule is the first stage of Europro Q-school on 6-7th October at Donnington Grove with 28 spots available to progress to the final stage the following week.

The new World Handicap System (WHS) comes into effect on the 2nd November 2020, which is now less than a month away.

We know that many of you have questions about what it is, why it's needed and how it will impact your current handicap.

The secret to a successful winter

Practice makes perfect, right? But perfect practise gets you there a lot faster. We've said it before - and we'll no doubt say it again - but winter provides the ideal opportunity to iron out some of those faults that have crept into your game.

Areas to work on in your golf game

Begin by evaluating (out of ten) how close you are to your target for each area of your game. It's always best to be completely honest with yourself when doing this. In other words, forget about the odd time when you've hit a shot like Tiger and focus on what happens consistently round after round.
