Arthur Doherty – Club Captain
Having retired from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service after more than 30 years' service, I have been a member of Leek Golf Club for the last six years. I feel incredibly privileged to have been invited to be the Captain of such a prestigious club.
I am confident that our new board of directors will oversee what is an exciting time of change. To bring us into the modern world of golf, where more people are playing – but fewer people are actually joining a club – it is especially important to me to encourage more families into our wonderful sport.
I am delighted to announce that my Vice Captain will be Kevin Perkins, a great friend of the club. Kevin is someone who has spared a lot of his own time to ensure the wellbeing of members remains the highest priority, and I look forward to working alongside him. |

My primary goal this year is to continue to improve the condition of the course - which is already a high standard - and to ensure that we carry on being ‘Queen of the Moorlands’.
We have some very important dates for our diaries in 2020. I look forward to welcoming the Staffordshire Girl’s County Championship and on Friday 10th July until Sunday 12th July we have my captain’s weekend away at Oulton Hall, Leeds. It would make me immensely happy and proud to have as many people as possible join me on that weekend.
Our club chef is fantastic and I can't wait for you to join me in the 19th hole for some quality food and warming atmosphere over the next 12 months.
Whether you’re a beginner, looking to perfect that putting stroke, or someone trying to bring your handicap down, our on-site professional Greg is available to help players of all abilities. We have a range of packages to suit your individual needs, more details are available on the website.
In closing, I would like to wish all the members of Leek Golf Club an enjoyable year of golf and I look forward to seeing you all out on our stunning fairways.

Leek Golf Club Winter Programme
Rainfall
With heavy rainfall over the last few months we have had to re-evaluate our Winter Program. Unfortunately with the amount of rain it will mean the re-levelling of tees will no longer take place for this season but it will be put in for next year’s Winter Programme.
Loss of green staff
As some of you may already know Martin Wootton, a long serving deputy greenkeeper, and the golf club have parted ways, this was an amicable and mutual decision and we wish Martin all the best in the future. This, however, leaves us with 4 green staff operating through the winter, this won’t affect the playability of the course but has had an impact on the Winter Programme.
Extending of summer tees
This job is now complete and you will notice next year that all summer tees are as wide and as long as possible.
9th to 10th path
This is also now complete, a little later than anticipated due to the heavy rain and also the flood of the 5th and 9th that washed away sleepers during the work on it.

Verti draining
All the greens and surrounds have been Verti-Drained this week to allow better drainage, you will notice that the wetter greens have been verti drained with larger holes.
We are going to start the process of verti draining the fairway soon and hope to have them all before the season starts.
Bunkers
Bunkers have been edged and look much better ready for the season. This is an ongoing job but all bunkers will be done before playing season.

Leaf Collection
Leaf collection has taken priority over a lot of jobs at this moment in time and is a very time consuming job but it has to be done.
|
Winter Matts
Again due to weather we are currently behind in the installation of the winter mats.
The 5th winter mat is now complete and we will be trying our best to get as many of these tees installed.
The tees that remain to be done are – 3rd, 5th, 6th, 12th, 15th and 17th.
|
Removal of trees
Again due to the weather being so wet and most jobs could not be done, we decided to remove the trees on the car park, this was always in the plan to allow more light and air to the 7th and 10th greens and also the 8th tee.
In total 26 trees were removed from around the clubhouse giving a wonderful view from the car park.
The clubhouse is now visible from the course and we will be tidying the bank and surrounding area.

Hands up if you’re still feeling stuffed from the excessive (but highly enjoyable) eating over the festive period... We’re not going to ask anything too strenuous of you this week as we ease our way into the new year so don’t worry! Instead, take a quick look at the image below and see if any of it looks familiar to you.

With a new season upon us and plenty of new products arriving in your local pro shop over the next few months (more on this in the coming weeks), now’s the perfect time to wave goodbye to the old tatty golf shoes, the worn-out gloves in a pile at the bottom of your bag, and the golf balls with more scuff marks than dimples! If you’re the type of golfer who keeps on top of their equipment then we salute you but if any of the above rings true, pop by the shop this weekend and give your stuff a winter MOT. We’re always here to help.
