Trackman Feedback (Brian Flynn)
I was looking to replace my very old Driver so I asked Greg when the Trackman arrived if I could have a fitting for one of the Titlist 913 Drivers he had on offer. Having warmed up with some 6 Iron shots, Greg showed me the readings which were reasonably good. I then hit my existing driver to establish a base to start from. This was the first shock, I was not carrying it much further than my 6 iron!!! Greg showed me that I was hitting down on the ball and was swinging from outside to inside, not good at all. Then we tried a number of new drivers but they did not make a great deal of difference to the results, mostly just more forgiving than my old Driver. We then decided that the problem was my terrible driver swing, so I booked a driver lesson with the Trackman.
The lesson started with 6 iron swings to warm up, the figures were good. I just need to hit a bit more down on the ball with Irons. The driver swings were poor again at the beginning but as I started to hit on the up and more from the inside they improved and became a lot more consistent. As it was too late after the lesson to play I had to wait till the next day to see if it improved my play on course. I used my GPS to measure and record all my shots. When I finish the round I felt that I had not really seen any improvement and was a bit disappointed.
When I got home I looked at the actual figures and was surprised to find that I had hit 9 out of 13 fairway with an average length of 194 yards which considering the wet conditions is very good for me. My figures would have been better except for just catching the very top of the tree on the left hand side of the 5th, will someone please cut the top of IT!!
I must say that the Trackman gave me the figures on how I was swinging rather then what I thought I was doing, thanks Greg.
When Brian came for his lesson on Driving there were 2 figures that showed up on the Trackman that I instantly noticed could drastically improve Brian's length and accuracy.
Brian has a tendency to hit down and across the ball with his driver, losing yards of carry and meaning the ball will move from left to right.
Here are a few of Brian's figures from the start of the lesson
Carry (yards) Attack Angle (degrees) Club Path (deg) Launch Angle (deg)
111.6 -4.2 -0.9 6.0
145.2 -2.8 -0.8 6.6
136.7 -4.1 -3.6 10.8
After a discussion on what needed to be done and how to do this Brian's figures really improved towards the end of the lesson.
Carry (yards) Attack Angle (degrees) Club Path (deg) Launch Angle (deg)
153.4 2.0 1.3 9.6
159.7 1.9 -1.5 14.5
153.6 1.5 -1.3 12.5
You will notice from the figures by improving Brian's Angle of Attack it will improve the launch angle giving Brian extra yards of carry.
It is now up to Brian to keep practising on this and returning at a later date to work more on his club path.
