Pro-Am news

Leek GC Pro-Am 2019

The Leek Pro-Am took place on Thursday, 5 September and the course was in fantastic condition.
The greens were fast and the pin positions were extremely difficult (I hold my hands up), add in the wind and the full length of the course it made for difficult scoring indeed.

Despite the conditions, professional Matt Cort (Beedles Lake) managed a superb three-under-par to win the event followed by Simon Lilley (Staverton Park) and Richard O’ Hanlon (St Kew) with very good level-par scores.

The team event was by Derek Wood, Sam Wood and Andy Leese representing Coors with their team Professional John Howells (JCB) with a wonderful sixteen-under-par.

Followed by Lisa Davies, Paula Parkes and Pip Nadin representing Logoshack with their Pro Matt Cort with a score of eleven-under-par.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the Main Sponsors and Hole Sponsors:

Mixed friendly Match Leek v Stafford Castle

The ladies and gents of Leek Golf Club travelled to Stafford Castle for the mixed friendly match on Friday, 30 August. The weather once again was very kind to us and with the sun shining we took to the course. The course was in great condition and some of the holes were very challenging.

Andrew Baxter found the ninth par-3 easy, with a fantastic hole-in-one. Congratulations to Andrew and a big thank you for the bottles of wine you provided with our lovely meal.

After much anticipation, the result was announced Leek 6 Stafford Castle 5. Well played everyone.

A return match will be at leek in 2020.

Ladies news

Ladies Invitation - Tuesday, 3 September

Leek ladies and their invited guests enjoyed an excellent day’s golf. The course was in great condition and only a small amount of rain fell.

Dave Allen kindly acted as starter and Disco Dave manned the halfway house serving drinks and cakes. Hilary Tovell, Jean Hickinbottom and Janet Allen registered all the players and the pro shop ran a twos comp and checked the cards.

Nearest the pin on the ninth was won by Marilyn Boulton and Julie Postlethwaite (guest) and on the thirteenth by Jayne Baxter and Linda Gregory (guest).

In second place (countback on back six) with 40 points was Nel Boulton and Julie Brown but the overall winners (countback on back nine) was Jenny Cordon and Julie Postlethwaite. Well done ladies and hope to see you again next year.

Why the recent surge?

Here’s some homework for you: the next time you're watching golf on TV, keep an eye on the number of pros using putters with larger heads. Whilst some golfers still prefer the traditional blade style putters from years gone by, over 60% of PGA Tour players have a larger headed putter in their bag today – the question is: why?

High MOI putters

These are all to do with stability, feel and alignment. When you take a look at Scotty Cameron's Phantom X 12 and 6 models (pictured above) you will see what we mean.

The larger head style of both putters is designed to increase MOI, which is crucial as it means the putter face will twist less at impact, especially when struck away from the sweet spot.

How do they work?

It's all to do with the additional weight in the extremities of the head when compared to traditional blade style putters, which helps to keep the face stable through impact.
