Captain Weekend Away - thanks for a great weekend Last weekend saw many Leek golfers, wives and partners travelling to Forest Pines Spa and Golf Resort Lincolnshire for Captains Weekend Away.
For a few, the weekend started on Thursday. Six of us joined Mr Captain and Carol for a very enjoyable meal. Mr Captain had to confess he had arrived without his golf shoes, one very necessary item for a golfing weekend. A phone call to his son who was arriving Friday to collect the shoes solved the problem. Trevor Ecclestone meanwhile due to a mix up at the bar had taken to drinking doubles, pints that is!
Friday most of the golfers arrived. Friday was not a competition day but the Beeches Forest course was available for those wishing to play golf. The weather was kind to us staying fine and warm. The evening meal was served in the Newton Suit dress code is smart casual. Saturday was competition day. A team competition off full handicap. Two scores to count on every hole with holes six and fourteen needing three scores. There were two nearest the pin holes being the eighth and twelfth. This competition was played on the Forest Pines course. Once again, the weather was kind. For the non-golfers, a coach was provided to take those who wished to visit the city of Lincoln. The coach departed the hotel at 11am and departed Lincoln at 4pm, so plenty of time to see the sites and shop. Saturday evening Mr Captain and Carol invited everyone to share pre-dinner aperitifs and nibbles in the private reception room at the Newton Suite. The dress code was jacket and tie and I must say, everyone, looked very smart. The drinks were expertly served by two new barmen, Arthur Doherty and Trevor two pints Eccleston. By this time our numbers had swelled to 100. We had an excellent meal served in the Newton Suite followed by a disco where we were able to dance away some of the calories. The first on the dance floor were the vice vices Maria Wootton and Kevin Perkin and I think Kevin wins the prize for most time spent on the dance floor. Sunday, I think there were a few bad heads and sleepy people. There were two competitions on Sunday. A Fourball Betterball Stableford and the 32nd Kenral annual golf competition, this was an individual Stableford. Both competitions off full handicap and again on the Forest Pines course. The prizes for the Kenral competition were donated by Kenral Perfumery Leek. On finishing our round, the scorecards were handed to Lincoln Boulton who acted as match secretary and produced the results. We all assembled in the Forest Suite for the prize presentation. Apologies for anything I’ve got wrong. I would say to the ladies who did not play golf how about giving it a try, you never know you might like it. Lady Captain.
