The Committee is pleased to announce that Kevin Perkin is to be nominated for Club Vice-Captain 2020. Maria Wootton will be nominated for the Ladies Section for the role of Lady Vice-Captain 2020.

Junior news

Captain's Day for Juniors - Saturday, 22 June 2019

Captain Mr Ken Hollins invited all juniors to participate in this annual competition on Saturday, 22 June.
The format of the day was a Stableford competition with plenty of prizes on offer.

Two competitions were run on the day, an 18-hole and a 9-hole competition for the newer and younger members playing off the blue tees.

The prize presentation took place in the clubhouse after the juniors had enjoyed an excellent meal provided by the Captain.

The results were as follows:

- Overall winner - (Captain’s Prize) Jamie Dreya – 37 points.
- Second place - Zarak Curly – 34 points.
- Third place - Hayden Dimmick – 33 points (on countback).
- Fourth place - Corey Wentworth – 33 points.
- Nearest the pin 4th – Corey Wentworth.

Blue tees competition

- First place - Matilda Rushton.
- Second place - Mille Salmon.
- Third place - Alex Salmon.

A big thank you to the Captain for his hospitality from the junior section.

Handicap news

The World Handicapping System

This new system is due to be introduced from November 2020 and every Club, worldwide, will have a ‘Slope Index’ to indicate the degree of ‘difficulty’ of their Course (a system already in use in America, etc).
Preliminary work has begun, and, following on from changes to our Course and in accordance with the USGA Course Rating System under the authorisation granted to England Golf, Leek GC Standard Scratch Scores

(SSS) are now:-

White Tees – SSS 70, Slope Index 128
Yellow Tees – SSS 69, Slope Index 123
Red Tees – SSS 71, Slope Index 123

Ongoing, Handicaps will now be calculated according to these SSS ratings.

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?
