Handicap and competition information |
World Handicap System This ‘System’ is due to be introduced sometime in 2020.
A ‘Slope Index’ will be calculated for each Golf Course, worldwide, and will reflect the playing difficulty, or otherwise, of all courses, (a system already in use in other countries). The ‘index figure’ will be used to adjust a Player’s Handicap when playing away from their Home Club.
Handicap Categories will no longer be used, A Player’s Handicap will be calculated from an average of the best eight scores from the last twenty competitions played. The more competitions played from now, the more accurate the H/cap when the system is introduced. Details are still to be finalised and will be published by England Golf in due course.

Maximum Score Competitions After further consideration, it has been decided that the Men’s section will not adopt this ‘system’ for Handicap Qualifying Competitions. Although stated in the ‘Rules of Golf 2019’ (Rule 21.2), it is not a mandatory rule. It is a different format designed to speed up play and not suitable for Medal competitions. All Medal Competition scores are converted to ‘Stableford’ scores for H/cap adjustments. High scores and ‘no returns’ are converted to a ‘nett double bogey’ (for handicap purposes only). NB – A ‘no return’ in a Medal Comp. can still result in a H/cap reduction. When playing in a competition you are obligated to continue to record scores on all further holes – an incomplete scorecard can have an adverse effect on the ‘Competition Standard Scratch’ score. e.g. A player with a H/cap of 15 returned a nett score of 71in a Medal Qualifying Competition, equalling the Competition Standard Score of the day. The player recorded a score of 8 at the 5th, par 4 hole, Stroke Index 10. The ‘nett double bogey’ score was seven (4+2+1) resulting in the eight being reduced to seven (for H/cap purposes only) with a consequent reduction in nett score to 70 and a H/cap reduction of 0.3. Had the player recorded a ‘no return’ at the 5th, for H/cap purposes the score would be the same i.e. a ‘nett double bogey’ score of seven. By taking advantage of this and completing subsequent holes, competitors have the opportunity to return scores below their H/cap or within their Buffer Zone even though they do not have a competition score.

Alternative to Stroke and Distance (Ball out of Bounds) This is a method designed to speed up play but will not be adopted by Leek GC. CONGU have stated that it is not acceptable for Qualifying Competitions. All competitions would become ‘Non Qualifiers’ resulting in Members not having H/caps. If it’s suspected that a ball is out of bounds – to save time, always play a ‘Provisional Ball’. If a ‘Provisional’ has not been played, and the ball is out of bounds, the course of action is ‘stroke and distance’ - back to the spot from where the last shot was played, (if that was from the Tee, the ball can be re-teed), with a one shot penalty, or you record a ‘no return’ for that particular hole. The ‘long walk back’ causes a delay, not only to your group, but also to the group behind. M Barker Match Secretary (22/04/2019)

Technology: it’s a word that scares some of us whilst excites others. When it comes to technology in golf, there’s no question that it has helped evolve the way we play the game for the better.
