Junior news

Faldo Series

Recently our Junior Captain, Harry Fearn; competed in the Faldo Series Midland Qualifier at Trentham. Winners of each age group go on to qualify for the Grand Final. This year the Grand Final is being staged at Al Ain Equestrian Shooting & Golf Club in Abu Dhabi. The qualifier is a three-round tournament making it count for amateurs to gain World Ranking Points. Shooting scores of 75 (+3), 65 (-7) and 71 (-1), Harry finished on a total of five under par. Harry finished second overall and unfortunately, due to the overall winner being in the Under 18 category as well this just meant Harry missed out on the chance of going to the grand final. However, this is a great way to end Harry’s season. With Harry’s second place finish it means he has gained a world ranking and lowered his handicap to +0.1.

Senior news

Seniors Open 4AM Success.

Monday 3rd September John Moss, Tony Thornhill, Mike Turner and Mick Matthews went to Buxton and High Peak Golf Club to play in the Seniors Open 4AM (best two scores from four). They scored 90 points (18 under par) finishing in first place.

1st Place - Ross Salmon 70-3= 67

Division Two

1st Place - Mark Rushton 80-13= 67

Division Three

1st Place - Dan Duffield 85-16= 69

Division Four

1st Place - Phil Sheldon 91-25= 66

Congratulations to Phil Sheldon who carded the lowest overall nett score and has qualified to represent the golf club in the Lombard Trophy qualifier alongside our Club Professional in 2019.

Coaching news

Long Game Practice

Just to clarify the situation regarding costs at our partner driving ranges.

The only range to currently offer a discount for Leek Golf Club players is Stone Driving Range.

Lightwood and Peak Practice (Buxton) do not give a discount at the moment, but guarantee a warm welcome to our members.

The association is mutually beneficial to all concerned, so do take advantage of the facilities available.

Please note that Peak Practice, Buxton, limits its opening hours to 10 till 4 at weekends during winter.

Winter Greens

Areas of the fairways have been marked with white ‘rings’ to indicate where the Winter Greens will be positioned.

These areas are to be considered as ‘Wrong Greens’ and play is prohibited until they are in use.

How do they make it look so easy?

This year's Open Championship venue, Carnoustie, was guarded by plenty of deep, nasty bunkers to try and trip the players up. Many club golfers dread finding the sand, yet the pros made hitting it close look so easy. So, how do they do it?

It's easier than you think
We come across many golfers in lessons that are confused about how much sand to take, both in terms of length and depth, which often results in thins over the green or duffs that stay in the bunker.

During a lesson we can teach you the perfect technique step-by-step, which involves taking a consistent amount of sand – roughly the length of a bank note - so that you always have the same sized divot around the ball, which makes it far easier to control your distance. Once your divot size is consistent, we can show you a few techniques to hit different distances to get the ball close to various pin positions.
