Competition news

Alteration to Fixture List

Members, please be aware the August Medal that got cancelled on Sunday 26th August, due to inclement weather. The fixture has now been rescheduled and will take place on Sunday 7th October.

This also means the Autumn Fourball has been moved from Sunday 7th October back to Sunday 14th October.

Prize Draw

Over the past couple months the Professional shop has been running a prize draw for The Open Edition Titleist Staff Bag. The random draw for the bag took place on Thursday 30th August. The winning number was 13 selected by Dave Robinson on behalf of the Captain’s Charity.

Well Done Zarak

Congratulations to Zarak Curley (Leek GC) winner of the 2018 Staffs Boys Matchplay Championship, beating Yaz Oakley (Walsall GC) 4&3 in the final played at the excellent Stone GC.

Gill's Great Win

The new holder of the Mactier Cup is Gill Damjanovic. This County Golf Competition is open to qualifying players from clubs all over Staffordshire, and this year 27 clubs were represented. Of the 49 entrants, Gill came out on top with 41 points off a handicap of 27.

The prestigious competition held this year at Penn Golf Club in the South of the County, is open to both bronze and silver division players, with prizes for the winners of each division. There is then a prize for the best overall score and Gill was the winner. She said 'I am very thrilled and delighted with the win. I did play well. The course was tricky and I was nervous, but I kept my head down and really enjoyed the day. My playing partners from Beau Desert and Walsall were great company and we had a good time. It would be nice to do it again next year.'

Just Four Weeks To Go

The Ryder Cup is edging ever closer, with a lot of speculation over who will be chosen as one of the four wildcards on both sides of the Atlantic.

There is an expectation that USA Team Captain Jim Furyk will give one of those spots to a resurgent Tiger Woods, who can now be picked on form rather than reputation after experiencing a stellar comeback season. Others vying for a trip to Le Golf National in Paris are Zach Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner and Tony Finau, providing Furyk with an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

Thomas Bjorn won’t know exactly who has qualified for his European team until September 2, but the big names – Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm – are dead certs. The bigger question lies in the wildcard picks. Ian Poulter has a fearsome Ryder Cup record, having never lost a singles match, and has played himself into good form this season. Paul Casey, Thomas Pieters, Russell Knox and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are all in contention too, not to mention Ryder Cup veterans Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia.

No more double trouble

The proposed changes to the Rules of Golf are less than six months away, so we thought we’d take a look at one introduction that you may not have been aware of...

Under the current Rules of Golf, if you strike the ball more than once in the course of a stroke (i.e. a double hit), you take a one-stroke penalty in addition to the stroke that was made.

However, under the proposed changes, if you accidentally hit the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, there is no penalty (new Rule 10.1a). This is because the R&A thought it was unfair and unnecessary to penalise a player for an accidental strike.

All in all, a sensible amendment to the current Rules of Golf in our opinion. Let us know your thoughts.
