Captains Day for Men As with many events this Summer, Captain's Day was blessed with excellent weather, possibility a little too hot for those on the course, but I can assure you that it was perfect under the parasol at the half way house and as such I coped with the day extremely well. Indeed, it was here that I spent most of the day where I was put in charge of beer tasting, it appeared to be the only task in which I could be trusted by my family and friends who manned the house. I found this the perfect location to greet the 160 members who took part in the event. During the morning, which from a temperature perspective was the best part of the day, most golfers took coffee or tea with their food. However, there were several golfers who decided on the alcohol option as early as 9:00am, as chief taster, I duly obliged, but not before sampling. As the day wore on it became apparent that there was a definite pattern to those on soft drink and to those on the alternative. In fact, I got to a point where after a short conversation about how their round was progressing, I instantly knew their tipple. It was at the half way house that I received the first complaint "who the h___ decided the pin positions" "Not I" came the reply. Strangely enough as more golfers passed through, I received many comments about the 10th in particular, it was either bogeyed or birdied and this was solely down to the positioning of the ball on the green. Top level 3 putt, bottom level 1 putt, so in retrospect I don't believe there was a problem with the pin positions, it's just that we need to think a little more in terms of golf strategy. Apart from this one criticism, most golfers were full of praise in terms of course condition. Given the exceptionally dry weather over the last 3 months, I truly feel that the course has played well and been in excellent condition. This I feel is down to a great deal of hard work by Head Green Keeper, John Turner, and his team who, many of you will be unaware, have been arriving as early as 3:30am to ensure that the greens are watered to the optimum level. So I'd like to thank John and his team, not only for ensuring a great course for Captain's Day, but also for the upkeep throughout the summer. Despite the pin positions, there were some great scores being posted, the best of which was 40 points by David Twist to take the Captain's Prize. My congratulations therefore go out to David and to all the other prize winners on the day. This year saw an introduction of a relaxed dress code for the presentation and given the temperature this was definitely the right decision. Whether it was through this decision or not remains to be seen, but I do believe that the attendance was much higher than in recent events. I'm fact besides the good attendance, out of the 15 prizes awarded only 1 winner was unable to make the evening.
Can I pass my thanks on to Mick Barker for his scoring and producing the results in extra quick time. I was also delighted to see that the presentation went without a hitch, correct names read out for the appropriate prize, Mick you must wear those specs more often.
Finally, I have thanked several individuals in this diatribe, but I do know that many more were involved in making the day a success and one that I will remember with fondness. So, can I therefore thank everyone who through participation or contribution made the day very special.
