Invitation Day

A full field took place in the Annual Invitation Day on Saturday and the weather couldn’t have been any different from last year’s wash out.

There were lots of fantastic scores in with the top three places separated by back six and back three.

The results are as follows:

1st – Phill Davies & Blake Norton (Northenden GC) 43 pts (won on back 6 score of 15).
2nd – Dave Moore & Mike Davis (Astbury GC) 43 pts (Back 3 score 7 points).
3rd – Simon Nadin & Phil James (Market Drayton GC) 43 pts (Back 3 score 6 points).
4th – Dennis Vincent & Martyn Lowe (Westwood GC) 42 pts.
5th – Roy Bamford & Neil Francis (Brocton GC) 42pts.

Nearest to the Pin 4th – Mark Shea.
Nearest to the Pin 11th – Dave Robinson.

Leann Nixon Lands Dream Job

Former Junior Captain Leann as recently be asked to take up the position as concierge at the new JCB Golf Club at Rocester. They will be funding her golf career by putting her through her PGA Course and hopefully giving her the opportunity to develop her own game even further.

Unfortunately for members Leann will be unavailable to continue providing refreshments for members at the halfway house on Sunday mornings. If any junior would be interested in helping out and earning a bit of pocket money please contact Pete Nixon who will be able to give you more details on the position.

Junior news

Juniors Perfrom Well in Midlands Boys Championship

Junior Captain Harry Fearn and Zarak Curley both put in very creditable performances at this year’s Midlands Championship held at Ludlow Golf Club on the 29th and 30th May.

Harry was in the mix for the title after the first 18 holes when he shot a 69 gross whilst Zarak was slightly off the pace with a score of 72. Charlie Salter from Northampton GC was the leader with a stunning 65.

The final round however saw Charlie fall back to joint 6th place after his 72 whilst Harry produced another score of 69 to finish 7th overall with a 138 total. Zarak fought hard and earned a creditable 74 to give him 20th place overall. The title was won by Joseph Quinn from Northampton 69, 66 with a 135 total.

Congratulations lads for flying the flag for the members of Leek Golf Club.

Senior news

Senior Section Update - May/June

On the 1st June our Senior Section held its annual Seniors Open. It's with pride I can report that this event went very well & as reported by our Senior Secretary, Mike Wainwright it attracted senior golfers from 37 different clubs.

The feedback from a great number of players was excellent. They were very impressed with the complete set up, from car park to registration. They also commented on how well our course is, & further to this how well they were greeted by all plus our hospitality throughout the day.

My sincere thanks to all those who gave up their time to help make this a successful day. All of you have been mentioned in our Secretary's Report & deservedly so. We now look forward to next year’s open 2019, interest in this has already commenced.

Just a quick update since my last newsletter; we have played, Stone (Lost 5 1/2 - 1 1/2), Brocton (Won 6 - 2), Trentham Park (Lost 6 - 2) Ingestre Park (Won 6 1/2 - 1 1/2) & Buxton High Peak (Lost 6 - 2).

Gents we are now looking well in our dress code (white shirts) & (black jumpers), those who have still to acquire these please do so as it has started to impress with other clubs.

Fairway wood off the deck

Being able to launch your fairway wood off the ground is a great attribute to have, especially when it comes to reaching those long par-4s and short par-5s. However, we know some of you struggle with this shot, so here is a simple drill to help turn things around.

Swing shallow to launch it high
Fairway woods are long and low lofted, which makes them tricky to get airborne. Many amateurs we teach lean back through impact in an effort to lift the ball up, but this typically results in a low strike on the club face and a weak, low ball flight.

Instead, try to brush the turf in front of your ball through impact. This will encourage you to keep your chest down longer, which can help you find the centre of the face and launch shots higher in the air. If you’re struggling to achieve this shallow swing action, try placing a glove around six inches in front of your ball and swing towards it after impact, as above.

Personalise your launch
This Mizuno GT180 driver features the brand’s Quick Switch adjustable hosel, which allows four degrees of loft change and three degrees of lie adjustment. So if you want to hit the ball higher, we can change your loft to optimise your launch and trajectory.

Shot shape control
On the GT180 we can also move two 7g sole weights to alter your spin and left-to-right dispersion to give you better accuracy off the tee. If you tend to struggle with a miss to the right, we can counteract this by moving these weights into a draw bias position to promote a right-to-left ball shape.

Don't outgrow your driver
If you’re planning on improving your technique and making swing changes, having an adjustable driver that you can alter to suit your new swing is much cheaper than forking out for a new model.
