Greetings from Greg Rogula
Leek Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Thursday 7th August saw the return of the Leek Pro-Am 2014 sponsored by F. Ball & co., Quality Golf Destinations and Molson Coors Brewery, after not being held for 2 years. This prestigious event consists of 3 amateur golfers being teamed up with a professional to compete for a team prize, while the professionals compete for an individual prize. The prize fund for the Professionals in this year's Pro-Am was just over £5,000, with 7 team prizes available. The event was contested by 43 teams the second biggest Pro-Am event the Midlands PGA has held this year.

Fortunately the weather could not have been any better for the day and the head green keeper John Turner and his staff Martin Wootton, Sam Bostock, Matt Bostock and Tom Cunningham got the course into as always superb condition. The tricky pin positions and lightning fast greens proved a real leveller on the day. However the standard of golf was exceptionally high from Professionals and Amateurs alike.

First group out of the day was Dave Gallimore (Captain), Paul Campion and Dave Fowler with Professional Greg Rogula from Leek Golf Club. Greg has always played in previous Leek Pro-Am events, but this time it was different. Being the organiser and playing in his home Pro-Am he admitted before the start of his round to feeling nervous and couldn't wait to get his round over. Greg completed a very steady round with 14 Pars and 4 Bogies to sign for a 74, this put him straight into the lead being as he was first out. 74 was good enough for a tied 13 finish, while the team finished with a very respectable 6 under.

The winning team consisted of Dave Robinson, Pete Nixon, Neil Shenton and Andrew Jones (Professional) with a team score of 15 under par. Andrew posted a gross 68 (2 under) which at the time put him into the clubhouse lead.

The Professionals' leading score stayed at 2 under late into the day, but was eventually beaten by Ian Walley from Kedleston Park, who returned a score of 66 (4 under) to win the Professionals' Individual prize and pick up a cheque for £850.

Ian's amateur team comprised Lincoln Boulton, Michael Barker and Mick Matthews whose team score of 11 under was good enough to take 2nd Place. They narrowly edged out Dave Lowe, Rob Taylor and Dennis Vincent into 3rd Place, who had posted at score of 10 under earlier in day.

The Pro-Am would not be possible without the generosity of the Main Sponsors and Hole Sponsors. We would like to take the opportunity to thank our 3 Main Sponsors F. Ball & co., Quality Golf Destinations & Molson Coors Brewery for their kind support this year. Also thanks to our 8 Hole Sponsors (Discount Discs, Browns Waste Management, Strata Group, Trent Trophies, A.L Boulton & Son, Heraldic Pottery, A.C.L and KMF). A special thank you also goes to Greg Rogula, Jake Scragg, John Cooper & Matt Rowley tournament controller from the Midlands PGA who have put in 100's of hours of work between them to make the day run smoothly.

ROSS MARTIN COLLECTS HIS COUNTY COLOURS

On Friday Ross Martin from Leek Golf Club was presented with his County Colours by the Staffordshire Seniors Captain Tony Wright. These are only presented to players who have represented Staffordshire on 8 occasions or achieved a total of 8 points. A delighted Ross stated "It is always a pleasure to play for the County and I only hope that the Staffordshire Captain will continue to select me for these matches".

Also playing in Friday's match at Uttoxeter Golf Club where Duncan Stott and Club Captain Dave Gallimore. With Ross Martin, Stott and Gallimore all winning their respective morning foursomes matches Staffordshire went in to the afternoon with a 4.5 to1.5 lead over a strong Leicestershire team. The afternoon 4 BBB matches were also successful for the Leek contingent with Stott winning comfortably, after shooting 7 birdies, while Gallimore managed to hang on to win by one on the last hole. Their performances ensured a comfortable overall winning margin over Leicestershire by 12.5 to 4.5.

All 3 have been selected for the next fixture later this month when they travel to Holme Hall Golf Club in Lincolnshire.

LEEK V BROCTON FRIENDLY MATCH

This fixture is quite rightly held in very high regard by both Clubs primarily because it has now been in existence for some 27 years and was originally instigated by former Club Secretary, Frank Cutts, who due to poor health was unable to attend on this occasion.

Following a defeat by 6.5 to 3.5 when Leek visited the splendid Brocton course earlier in the season it looked odds on that this year the "Claret Jug" would be returning to the south of the County. Brocton's Captain, Gerald Griffin, felt confident that his team would return home as the victors and wasted no time in telling his our Club Captain that our time as the holders of the trophy was about to come to an end.

After a hard fought 18 holes Dave Gallimore and debutant Ivan Harrison managed to come from behind to win on the 18th hole to set the tone for the rest of the matches. Other notable wins came from the Vice Captain Trevor Eccleston and his partner Dave Allen (5 &4) and Andy Baxter and Roy Morris (4 & 3). Brilliant comebacks from Brian Baggaley & Ross Martin and Ralph Harrison & James Hutchinson earned valuable half points for Leek leaving the result to the remaining match out on the course. Mike Wootton was playing like a Pro with Neal Parton and after shooting a gross score of 67 (for 15 holes), a display that our Professional would have been proud of, managed to get the win that was required to secure a 6.5 to 3.5 win.

The overall score, taking into account the home and away fixtures, was a tied match with both team achieving 10 points each. This magnificent result for Leek Golf Club ensured that the "Claret Jug" remained on home territory.

The friendship and camaraderie with the gentlemen of Brocton continued well into the evening and as George Tatton would say "Good friends, good wine and good company make for the perfect day".

My personal thanks to my Vice Captain, Trevor Eccleston, for getting a fine body of men together to take on the might of Brocton and been able to overcome a serious deficit. This was yet another memorable day in my year as your Captain.

Thank you

LEEK V WESTWOOD MIXED FRIENDLY MATCH

The third and final mixed friendly match was played under bright blue skies and a rip roaring wind that kept the ominous black rain clouds far away.

Unfortunately Mr. Captain was unable to play and sent along his right hand man, Mr. Vice Captain Trevor Eccleston to play in his first mixed match ever.

As the Lady Captain promptly put her first ball just short of the Captain's Bunker on the 18th, he must have wondered what he had let himself in for. The match against Westwood's Captain Alan Hulme and President Brenda Prince was nip and tuck through the first nine holes and then the Lady Captain redeemed herself by sinking a 40 foot putt on the 14th (it gets longer every time she mentions it) to put the home side in a winning position which was concluded on the 15th green.

As each team completed their rounds, it became apparent that we had achieved a resounding win (7/2), thereby ending the mixed friendly matches for 2014 with a 100% record.

The importance of events such as these is not necessarily the winning, but the friendships made and strengthened over the years with like-minded people. As everyone sipped their wine (and Doombars) and tucked into Salmon and Roasted Vegetables, the cacophony of noise bore testament to the success of the day.

As the sun set Mr Vice got to his feet with a little trepidation, however he wowed the audience with his own style and concluded that playing in mixed matches was not so bad after all! Another convert. We look forward to more couples joining in next year.

HOLE IN ONE

Congratulations to Tom Hodgkinson on achieving a Hole in One at the 4th Hole, playing in the August Medal on Sunday in what can only be described as horrendous conditions. Tom came very close to doubling the feat on the 7th striking the flag and finishing no more than 6 inches from the hole. Just to make the day even better for him he carded a nett 68 and won the Division 3 Medal, well done Tom.

SCORECARDS

A cautionary tale from Mike Barker (Assistant to the Handicap Secretary)

Mistakes can be both humiliating and tragic.

I recently played in a Seniors 4BBB Stableford Open at Oswestry G C and marked the card of Ken Hollins (player A) and Lincoln Boulton (player B). They achieved what was a winning Stableford score of 42 points. The card was signed by myself and Lincoln and handed in to the Scorer.

Imagine my humiliation later, when the Scorer pointed out I'd transposed the scores, Lincoln's in column A and Ken's in column B. The R&A Rules are specific on this point and they were disqualified. A tragedy for both Ken and Lincoln and I give them my profound apologies, especially to Ken, Lincoln must shoulder some of the blame for not checking the card properly.

CAPTAIN'S DAY is this weekend and your Captain, Mr David Gallimore, does not want anyone's day ruined by Scorecard errors. Please don't assume that if a points total is correct, the card is correct. Your responsibility is for the correct GROSS scores, in the correct boxes, the computer system (ably assisted by Greg and Jake) will take care of the rest.

PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES (A REMINDER)

Scorecard should show the name of the competition, the date, YOUR NAME and your current HANDICAP. Sounds simple, but we often have cards submitted without this information.

Before handing in your card, the following are ESSENTIAL and if omitted will result in DISQUALIFICATION.

*Your CORRECT HANDICAP is shown (it's on the computer screen when you sign in to the competition. NB if you don't sign in PRIOR to playing you will be deleted from the competition) *Your GROSS SCORES are recorded.

*You have SIGNED your card (if your signature is an illegible scrawl, your initials would help if any disputes arise)

There will be a Prize Presentation following the competition which you MUST attend if you have a won a prize if you wish to claim it. The Captain is giving prizes for all Handicap Divisions and if a 'Winner' does not attend the prize will go to the next person who is in attendance.

REMEMBER - You will also have to wear JACKET & TIE if you attend the Presentation.

Mike Barker (Assistant to the Handicap Secretary)
