Into a bright future A warm welcome to all members of Leek Golf Club. Captain's report April 2018 I would like to start by saying a big thank you to everyone who participated in the Captain's Charity Easter egg raffle and The Masters Charity draw. In accordance with new data protection laws and to avoid the unwanted receipt of begging letters, I will keep the names of the winners confidential, all that I will say is congratulations to you all and Gerry well done. The combined events raised a terrific £355, this will go in the pot towards my nominated Charities for 2018; Douglas Macmillan and the Peter Alliss Wheelchair Appeal. I'm sure you'll all agree that the Dougie Mac Charity do a wonderful job and their work has probably touched everyone in some way. As for the Wheelchair appeal then this provides the funding of powered wheelchairs for disabled youngsters and is a charity LGC has supported for many years. Those of you who were present during 2017 Phil's Captain's Charity event last year will remember the touching but proud way the recipient, Jack, went about demonstrating his competence in the new wheelchair. With the first 2 competitions of the year cancelled, I'm very much hoping that the cold, damp and dreary start to the year relents to allow us to get the Golfing season underway. The poor winter and the delay in the appearance of spring has had a major impact to the course; restricting the green's staff from carrying out critical tasks, reducing the course availability and creating fixture congestion. Nevertheless, as we've experienced before, a few weeks of decent weather will make a significant difference to the course condition and I'm sure that we'll very quickly forget the closures, mud, ropes and temporaries. That will just leave our Hon. Match Secretary with the simple task of rearranging the cancelled fixtures. One task I have requested the Sub. Committee Chair's undertake, is the improvement of communication to our membership. Hopefully, you will have seen through the News Letter, emails, website and noticeboards that the Sub Committees are honouring their commitment to keep you informed. With this in mind, and as I'm sure you are aware, the Green's Sub Committee are holding a Green's Forum on Thursday the 26th of April during which there will be an explanation of course activities completed, planned and an opportunity for members to ask questions. Finally, I feel a special mention of thanks is in order for the 'Retention and Recruitment of Members Group'. This focus Group, working under the Policy & Strategic development Sub Committee, has been organised by the Ladies section with the objective of developing ideas and plans for the growth and sustainability of our Golf Club. The team, supported by England Golf, has worked extremely hard to provide some excellent ideas and a forward strategy.
