Course update

Leek GC Course Update - 28/02/2018

Once again we are being heavily impacted by the weather, deep snow covering.
Work has commenced stripping the old 13th Yellow tee to enable it to be levelled and the white medal tee moved up. This is another task which is being directly impacted by weather as we are unable to cut and lay the turf.

Bunkers

We have started the process of putting sand into the bunkers ready for the start of the season, this is an ongoing activity over the next month and is quite labour intensive. When required for safety if a flag is on the main green it will be moved to the temporary green for as long as it takes to add and spread the sand out in that greens bunkers, it will then be returned to the main green when the work is completed.

Greens Committee Open Forum notification

Your Greens Committee will be holding an open forum in the club house for all members on Thursday 19th April 2018 at 19:00pm all are invited to come along and ask questions.

Course Signage Sponsors

Here is an example of the proposed new course signage, we currently have 9 confirmed hole sponsors, there is an opportunity for individuals or companies to sponsor the remaining holes and have their names / company names displayed on the plain panel below the details panel.

Badger issues

We are all aware of the damage being caused by feeding badgers on the course and will be trying to deter the animals from entering the course.

We are very restricted in what we can and cannot do in respect of deterrents but will try as many options as we can to try to find a solution, there are no guarantees that these will work, but we will try.

Senior news

A very sad time for the club

I am sorry to have to commence this article on a sad note. You may or may not be aware of the deaths of three of our Clubs most senior members: - Arthur Garner, Arthur Davenport and Donald Tooth. Our thoughts are with all of their families at this very sad time.

Senior Jumpers

I would now like to update you all regarding our Senior jumpers. We now have sample sizes in the Pro Shop for you to try on before placing your order. Please see Greg over the coming weeks to try these jumpers on for size & then place your order with him. The cost to us is only £15 which will include our Club and sponsors logos. The colour will be black. Shirts will be white. Thanks to Lindsay Allen “Supersport” for his kind involvement in producing these for us, also a very big thank you to “Pointons” our sponsor.

What's coming up?

Our noticeboard now has our first two games sheets for you to append your names. Our pre-season tournament is being held at the Club on Friday 9th March. We are still looking for more names so please sign up. Thanks gents.

Winter League (week 11) - Sunday 25th February

  • 1st place - Dave Robinson - 44 points (5 points).
  • 2nd place - John Isaacs - 42 points (4 points).
  • 3rd place - Steve Matthews - 40 points (3 points).
  • 4th place - Allan Clarke - 39 points (2 points).
  • 5th place - Dennis Vincent - 38 points (1 point).

Handicap Adjustments

  • Dave Robinson 8 to 6.
  • John Isaacs 17 to 16.

Make your practice worthwhile

Not everyone has the time for regular putting practice, so it’s important that you maximise its benefits when you do, going for quality over quantity. The next time you take to the putting green, give these two drills a go and see how you get on.

Around the clock drill

Around the clock drill
We all know that holing out inside six feet is key to a good score, so if you can improve your conversion rate in this range you’re guaranteed to get better. Try this drill, where the aim is to hole each putt in a circle, but if you miss one you have to start again. Each putt will have a slightly different break that you’ll need to read, so it’s also a great drill for fine tuning your pre-shot routine.

Ladder drill
If you have a competitive side and want to practise a mix of distance control, accuracy and handling pressure, try this ladder drill. Starting three foot from the hole, move a grip length further away each time you hole a putt. Going back to the start if you miss allows the pressure to build up and tests your nerves.

The best threeball formats

If you’re tired of playing the same formats each time you take to the course, below are some alternative options we think will help make things a bit more exciting for your threeball.

3ball formats

Threeball Matchplay
Each member in your group plays singles matchplay against the other two, with full shots received in each game. It means that even if you get beaten in one match by the 14th, you’ve still got a chance of redeeming yourself in the other.

Wentworth
The lowest handicap (A) plays off scratch with the other two (B and C) receiving three-quarters difference. Holes 1-6 sees A take on the betterball of B/C, holes 7-12 sees B take on A/C, and holes 13-18 sees C take on A/B. Whoever wins a hole gets a point.

American Stableford
Each hole has six points up for grabs. The winner receives four and the runner-up two. If the runners-up tie both players get one point and if two players tie to win they both receive three. The winner is the golfer with the most points after 18 holes.
