PRO/CAPTAIN CHALLENGE - AWAY

SANDIWAY GOLF CLUB - FRIDAY 13th JUNE

To all Members & Committee at Leek Golf Club-a message from Rob Thompson

I would like to start by firstly acknowledging the great work and considerable effort that the Captain (Dave Gallimore) and Professional (Greg Rogula) have put in to make my membership at the club a pleasurable one.

The Pro/Captain Challenge is a great idea to give members the chance to play with one of the best golfers at the club and the professional. Rob Taylor and I enjoyed giving them a golfing lesson back in April with a comfortable 5&4 victory. However the great prize of a further battle at Sandiway Golf Club is where the lesson began for Rob and me.

Sandiway Golf Club Nr. Northwich, Cheshire is a beautiful golf course, and if you ever have the chance to play there, I highly recommend that you do.

Unfortunately the Pro/Captain pairing both turned up with their 'A' Game whilst Rob & I were masquerading as single figure golfers, only in possession of a 'M-Z' Game.

Having said that we did manage a half down the 1st, but easy pars were enough for Pro/Captain to win the 2nd (Rob Taylor lost Ball and Rob Thompson not a good bunker player). The long par 3 3rd was halved. (I mean managed to salvage a half from a winning position by performing as the worst off the green putter at any club. Oh! And Rob Taylor lost his ball.

The 4th was halved with par all round, welcome to the game Rob Taylor! The 5th was lost to quality play from both Pro & Captain and when the Captain birdied the 6th the writing was on the wall. "Can't do anything about that" was the communication between Rob & Rob. Pro/Captain 3up after 6.

The 7th saw the first sign of a fight from Taylor/Thompson-both playing this hole well with a shot. Score-back to Pro/Captain 2up. The 8th was halved in solid pars.

The 9th saw a horrendous tee shot from the professional, followed by an even worse 2nd shot missing the green way right. Somehow from an awful lie and the worst short game in the club the Pro chipped it stone dead for a par and unlikely half. The short 455 yard par 4 10th (what?!) was looking like a Pro/Captain win with both making easy pars, only for Rob Taylor to make his first useful contribution in holing a 30ft putt for par and the half. Pro/Captain 2up.

At the 11th - a monster par 3, Rob Taylor hit a superb shot to 6ft. "shot of the day" was the call from Pro/Captain. Greg found the green and left himself 15ft for his birdie, Greg's putt was missed and I holed for par leaving Rob Taylor a free putt for birdie and the win unfortunately his putt lipped out. "That was the moment" Rob & Rob commented heading to the 12th, having missed the chance to get the score back to 1 down. Pro/Captain 2up.

A par for Rob Taylor & Pro/Captain at the 12th kept the score Pro/Captain 2up. The 13th a simple 120 yard par 3, Rob Taylor pulls his ball into the bunker and Thompson smashes his wedge all of 70 yards, Pro/Captain are all over it. Pro/Captain 3up with 5 to play. "is it all over?" Taylor & Thompson ponder.

At the 14th Hole the Captain hits a great drive but finds the fairway bunker, Greg hits a wayward drive so far right "don't bother looking for it" is the call from both the opposition and his partner. The Captain, Rob and I are all on the green for 3, half a chance for Taylor/Thompson until what can only be described as a miracle of miracles Greg finds his ball, (must have hit a cow in the farmer's field and rebounded back onto the course). Greg put the ball onto the green and won the hole to put pro/Captain in the ascendancy at 4 up with 4 to play. There was some quite offensive comments from Rob & Rob in the direction of the Pro, quite out of character for the two gentleman policemen.

Taylor/Thompson won the 15th to give a glimpse of a great escape. That glimmer of hope disappeared on the par 5 16th when Greg comprehensively won the hole. (No thanks to the Captain who hit his first 3 shots on a 500 yard par 5 no more than 100 yards). Fortunately his 4th shot was so far wide the ball was lost, and like a dog gone off his back legs the Captain was put out of his misery, but the match was over to give the Pro/Captain a 4&2 Win.

We tried to soften the blow with talk of a resounding aggregate win but that fell on deaf ears, on a serious note I would like to thank the captain on behalf of Rob and Myself for the great prize. We looked forward to the next match especially with the score 1-1.

Rob Thompson
