The Winter Cup
This was the 30th season of our Winter Cup competition. Some of our current players were 'Founder Members' but it might be unkind to say who they are.
It is a very sociable league that takes place every Saturday between the beginning of October and the end of March. It is an individual Stableford competition with results based on the average of the best ten scores from the 26 possible starts. We now have our own handicapping system that adjusts handicaps each week and helps to keep the bandits under control. Playing partners for the day are drawn out of the hat on Saturday morning. Therefore, over the course of the season, everyone probably gets to play with all the other members. As I said it's very sociable.
Abiding recollections of the winter were that it was very wet. However, the course was only closed on three Saturdays. There were a number of other Saturdays when most of us decided not to play but two or three of the most intrepid (that's one way to describe them) decided to play. Full marks to the ground staff for keeping the course open when many of us thought it should have been closed. Nature, and the ground crew, are however very good and I've been very pleasantly surprised at how quickly the course has responded to the current period of fine weather.
The last Saturday of each month is Prize Day (known locally as 'bottle day' - you can guess why!). The top five on the day win a bottle ranging from spirits to wine. Needless to say there is always a very full turnout on these days. However there's a sting in the tail because winners are even more severely handicapped for subsequent prize days. This ensures that the prizes are shared around amongst most of the members. This year only one person failed to win a bottle although it has to be said that some others won more than their fair share.
There were several leaders during the first half of the season and as we neared the end any one of four or five members could have won. David Smith (Endon) started the season with a handicap of 19 and finished on 17. His final average of 37.3 was good enough for him to win by a reasonable margin. Last year's winner, Syd Birch, was second with an average of 36.6, while Stuart Eccleston came third with an average of 36.3, narrowly beating Brian Cockersole, into fourth place by virtue of a better 11th score. Stuart is our most recent member. He started the season with a handicap of 19 and finished with 15 having recorded the highest score of the winter with 47 points.
Last season an anonymous donor gave us a new trophy which we decided to award to the person who was bottom of the league table. The first winner of the appropriately named 'Bottom Trophy' was Terry Williams. It has already become a much coveted trophy and it is clear from the scores that many of us tried to win it.
On the evening of the 1st April members were joined by their wives and some 'Honorary Members' for the annual 'Awards Dinner' in the Clubhouse. After an excellent meal the prizes were presented to David (who, as they say, couldn't be with us), Syd and Stuart (also not present) while Roger Ward was the second winner of the 'Bottom Trophy'. Arthur Doherty was host and MC and helped us all to enjoy a fitting end to a thoroughly enjoyable Winter Cup season.
