Liam Hancock - Europro Qualifying 2017
Monday, 3 January Liam landed in Portugal to start his full season along with Challenge and European tour players on the Algarve Pro Golf Tour.
Liam played some solid Golf out there this season, making several top 20 finishes, the last event before returning home in March was the Castro Marim Course and just one bad tee shot on the very last hole cost Liam a top three finish, still T9 was good enough to pick up some more money to add to his pot for the Algarve trip.
Arriving home on Tuesday 14th March, the family was faced with the worst news possible, that Liam's mum Helen was gravely ill, she had been in Birmingham Hospital since January with complications following a failed Bone Marrow Transplant, and sadly Helen passed away two days later on 16th March 2017.
Europro Tour Qualifying was due to start the following week and Helen would have wanted Liam to push on and qualify, so off to Bristol, and The Player Club for first stage qualifying, Liam started the first round brightly with three birdies in the opening 9 holes only to drop a couple on the back nine to finish level par for the day, day two was a different story with three birdies and an eagle finishing with a 69 gross two under par to claim second spot overhaul, not a bad result with 77 players attending.
Home for a few days, with Mum's funeral on Monday,4 April, Liam had to set off to Frilford Heath in South Oxford the very next day at 5.30am to get a practice round in, and just walk the second course due to time restrictions. The Finals are held over three days and with 240 competitors entering, two courses are used.
Liam teed off at 1.00pm day one on the harder Red course, with only three birdies and an unfortunate triple on 14 costs Liam a three over par finish for the day. Day two on the Blue course Liam had to play well, with a double on the third hole, followed by back to back birdies on four and five restored the order, and a brilliant eagle on eight meant two under par front nine, with a further four birdies on the back nine and a double bogie on the tenth, left Liam finishing with a superbly hard fought 1 under par on day and making the all-important cut, only the top 80 players making the cut from the starting field of 240 players.
I think events of the last two weeks finally caught up with Liam on the final day, however that all important Tour Card is already secure and in the bag ready for the season ahead.
I am sure Helen would have been immensely proud of Liam and will be watching over him I'm sure.
2017 Liam will have a full Europro Tour card, and hopefully a Challenge Tour invite in the post for the second place he achieved at The Players Club.
Liam will see you all at the club.
