Greens Update
Dear Members,
Just some early season course information.
The start of the new golfing season is once again upon us, the course can become quite congested at times, so would you all please be aware of the greens staff. Do not play a shot if the ground staff, are in range. On a few occasion's last season, when I was out cutting I had a few near misses, as due to the noise of the equipment and ear protection we can't hear any shouts. Equally the green-keepers have been reminded of the rule to allow play when possible, however please be aware that it's impossible for them to stop for every single golfer. They simply would not be able to complete their tasks in a reasonable timeframe. More golfers and course usage means more pitch marks. In the best interest of your course please be responsible and repair all pitch marks, not just those you think you have caused.
We pride ourselves on proving a sustainable golf course with very limited chemical usage, but sometimes we are forced into a situation where we would normally spray for worms on fairways and leather jackets in greens. However, due to government legislation the chemicals previously available have now been completely banned for amenity use. Without any new controls in the pipeline this will obviously have a negative effect on the presentation of the course. This year we will see a greater amount of worm casting (mud smear) on tees and fairways from September onwards. The greens won't be as much affected due to the large volume of sand dressing we apply, worms simply don't like sand.
Leather jackets-daddy long legs, lay eggs in turf around September time once they have hatched, they enjoy grass roots on greens, and you will notice greater activity when birds are pecking. We do have a few measures to try and protect the course but we are really in the hands of nature until alternative control measures are introduced. Of course, we won't be alone in fighting this battle, every golf course in the UK will be faced with the same problem.
Enjoy you early season golf.

1892 Club
Did you know that Leek Golf Club belongs to an exclusive 'club', the criterion for membership being that they were all founded in 1892, and they are all private members' clubs?
Each club has agreed to be part of a friendly association, each offering reciprocal courtesy visits to each other's club members.
To take advantage of these courtesies, the following procedure must be followed:
Members must make their own arrangements with the secretary of the club they wish to visit, by letter or phone, giving as much notice as possible.
Members should take with them a letter of introduction, together with their handicap certificate, which can be obtained from the office.
Check their dress code with the host club, and respect it.
These courtesies do not extend to anyone whose club is not a member of the 1892 club.
Remember that when visiting other clubs, you are an ambassador of your golf club, and when others visit us please extend every courtesy to them as our guests.
Moderation in numbers should be observed (a car load and not a coach load), as should your number of visits to any particular club.
For simplicity, the participating clubs are listed below. Details such as phone number, email addresses, postcode and general location are listed in full and are on display in the secretary's area in the clubhouse foyer.
Participating Clubs: Alfreton, Ballater, Bathgate, Clacton, Dunkeld & Birnam, Fairfield, Fulneck, Heaton Moor, Hillingdon, Huntly, Kings Norton, Marple, Mid Herts, Moseley, Newcastle United, Peebles, Petersfield, Preston, Richmond, Royston, Stourbridge, South Beds, South Staffs, Taunton & Pickeridge, Thames Ditton & Esher, Ventnor, Warren, Wearside, West Lothian and Withington.
Why don't you give this 'perk' a go! Let us have a review and know how you get on, and we will publish your comments in the newsletter.
Happy Golfing!
