When you have completed your 1st nine holes there is a half way house where hot and cold drinks will be provided by the Captain and for those of you who are "enjoying the experience" a lager, beer or a glass of wine will also be provided for your consumption. Please take 20 minutes at this point to have a chat and "smell the flowers" as we are not in a rush today.

When you are playing your 2nd shots the 18th green you may have a capacity crowd cheering you on from the patio area. There is a "nearest the pin" competition here as well as all of the par 3s.

On completion of a successful day's golf please don your jacket and ties for the 2 course evening meal and presentation. There will be £500 worth of prizes on offer so get practicing!!!!

I will look forward to speaking to you all personally on the day. Thanks for coming.

PRO / CAPTAIN CHARITY CHALLENGE

Captain V Lincoln as Greg and Mick Enjoy the Walk

"Our opponents had cried off from playing us earlier in the season because Lincoln had lost his form. They were adamant that they were now ready for us" said the Professional. "We are ready" was the battle cry from Club stalwarts Lincoln Boulton and his sidekick Mick Barker last Tuesday when they took on Greg and Dave in the Pro / Captain Challenge in aid of the Captain's Charity. Lincoln was receiving 7 shots and Mick 10 shots. As you can see from the photograph Greg had donned his "COMEDY TROUSERS" as a sign of his confidence going into this match.

All hit good drives down the 1st but only Linc and the Captain knocked it onto the green. Lincoln holed for his birdie from 15 feet whilst the Captain shaved the hole which gave the Challengers first blood. 1 up. Mick then commented to the Captain that "you never want to win the 1st" which was a strange sort of remark because I am not bothered which holes I win but this may have indicated where Mick's game was mentally.

Only Greg managed to hit a good drive up the 2nd hole but missed badly with a wedge. "It was a funny distance" he said. Please feel free to remind him of this comment whenever you go in to the Pro shop. On the other side of the fairway Mick was having a series of "epileptic chips" from 30 yards whilst Lincoln developed tourettes whenever he tried to use the new wedges that Greg had recently sold him. This ensured that the Captain could get a half even though he thought that the hole was lost some time earlier. Score remained at 1up and the chunterring began!

There scores were levelled on the 3rd when the Pro got a good birdie 3. The 4th was won with another 3 from the Pro /Captain pairing and this was extended when Greg knocked in another birdie on the 5th to make the score 2 up. Up to this point Mick was struggling to say the least. He hadn't actually putted out on any hole and Greg was spending most of his time saying to Mick "I have got a driver in the shop that would help you. I have some balls that might improve you game".

On the sixth the tables were turned when Mick played a delicate chip over the right hand bunker. It landed like a butterfly, rolled gently across the green, down the severe slope and in to the centre of the hole for a birdie 4. "Would you Adam and Eve it". This went on to win "The Shot of the Day" and Mick's swagger returned. "That's the turning point" his playing partner stated confidently. Score Pro /Captain 1 up.

The 7th and 8th were halved and when Lincoln won the 9th with a par 3 the scores were level at the half way point.

The 10th was always going to favour Greg but his iron shot in to the green was another shot that he would not like you to remind him of. The length was good but unfortunately way to right of his intended target. Lincoln, playing on his own again after Mick's birdie feast on the 6th, hit his approach long and left which left the Captain with an opportunity to win the hole when he hit his sand wedge to 10 feet. Hole conceded and the lead was regained.

The Captained managed to birdie the 11th from 10 feet but Mick (Lincoln's partner) holed an 8 footer under pressure for a 3 nett 2 to ensure that the score stayed unchanged.

Lincoln found trouble on the 12th but played a great shot from 100 yards and holed his putt for a par 4. Mick had a tap in opportunity to provide a back up if required. Score 1 to Pro/Captain.

It was important that the Challengers win the 13th. Both were receiving shots and the Captain had his shots to look forward to on the 14th and 15th holes. Both Pro and Captain just about hit the 13th green but were along way from the hole. Lincoln found the bunker and Mick was just off to the left. Mick's chip to 6 feet provided the opportunity to get back into the match but it shaved the right hand side of the hole and stayed out. Greg holed out from 3 feet to ensure a half.

The 14th and 15th holes allowed Greg's playing partners to receive shots from him and when The Captain hit a solid one down the middle of the 14th the writing was on the wall. Mick bunkered and Lincoln hooked his left in to the conifers. A 6 was the best that the Challengers could do so the hole was conceded without a putt being made. The same sequence of events happened again on the 15th and again a 6 was the best that the Challengers could do. Pro / Captain 3 up and 3 to play.

The match was over when the 16th was halved with par 5s. "The scoring wasn't great but they gave us a few holes towards the end" said the Captain. Lincoln agreed "we just hit a few bad tee shots at the wrong time, and we should have won the 2nd".

The Captain would like to thank everyone who has taken part in this seasons Pro/Captain Challenge and helped the Captain's Charity. It is only £10 per person to take part and it is worth that just to experience playing with our Club Professional. You will see him playing shots that no one else at LGC can play. Please pop in to the Pro shop and arrange a date and a time with Jake, I am sure that it will prove to be a memorable day in you golfing season.

1st TEAM vs CHASE (HOME)

After losing in their second match of year AWAY at The Chase 8-4, the 1st team exacted their revenge at home by fielding a strong team with the highest handicap being 4

Dunc Stott and Mr Captain stormed to a 6&4 victory

Phil Davies & Dan Smart, Ross Salmon & Rob Furmston and Warren Alcock & Jim Wilshaw also recorded impressive 4&3 wins.

Dan Bourne & Chris Flavell, Liam Hancock & Gareth Salt completed the 12-0 white wash with 2&1 victories.

Well done to the team, hope to keep up the good form next week away against Westwood.

2nd TEAM vs UTTOXETER (AWAY)

Unfortunately the team lost 10-2 at Uttoxeter which is a historically tough venue for the team.

Rob Thompson & Tony Lovatt lost on the last hole which turned out to be a recurring theme. Rich Corden & Zulf Khafila got a half again scoring the point on the last hole.

Lincoln Boulton & Andy Tooth lost to a young player who was -2 gross for the last 11 holes.

Mark Shea & Matt Lancaster secured a half on the last while Ross Martin & Paul Brass, Elliott Nadin & Mike Andrews all fell victim to the 18th hole curse.

MONDAY 9th JUNE

Monday morning saw one the heaviest storms Leek Golf Club has ever seen, the greens flooded in minutes leaving them looking more like lakes than putting greens. It is also credit to the course that by 4:30pm the course was back open and completely playable, something that didn't look likely when the picture below was taken.

DOUGLAS MACMILLAN HOSPICE

On Thursday 26th June, I will be riding in a 100 mile charity bike ride. I will be travelling from Liverpool - Chester - Liverpool, with a target time of under 7 hours with the added pressure of if I don't ride fast enough the Mersey Tunnel with close before I get there.

I have set up a Just Giving page to raise money for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice. If you would like to sponsor me and support a fantastic local charity please go to the Just Giving website and type in my name 'Mark Shea' and click donate.

I have never done a ride of this distance so rest assured it is going to hurt, a lot!!

Mark Shea (2nd Team Captain)

Use the 'tee drill' to groove a powerful strike

Last week we looked at how brands are creating irons that offer more distance than ever before. With a 9-iron in your hands, as opposed to a 7-iron, we're talking more looks at birdies - so long as your ball-striking is sound. So, here's a drill to help you deliver cleaner, more powerful strikes...
