Goodbye to a Golfing Legend

As you may be aware a Thanks Giving Service to celebrate the life of Geoff Marks was held at Stoke Minster on Thursday last, 9th February and I am pleased to report that members of Leek Golf club were well represented.

For those of you that didn't know Geoff, here are a few of his achievements:

  • Member of Trentham GC for over 60 years and a past Club Captain & President;
  • 2008 Appointed an O.B.E. in the Queen's Birthday Honours;
  • 1955 Staffordshire Boys' Champion;
  • Played 261 times for Staffs winning 160 points;
  • Eight times Staffs Amateur Champion;
  • Played 65 times for England between 1963-75 winning 45 points;
  • Played in 1969 & 1971 GB & Ireland Walker Cup Teams (Won a singles against Lanny Wadkins lost narrowly to Tom Kite, both successful USPGA Tour professionals of the future);
  • Captain of Walker Cup Teams 1987 &1989 (The 1989 Team victory in USA was the first time GB & Ireland had won in America);
  • England Team Captain from 1980-83;
  • President of the English Golf Union in 1995;
  • Served on several R&A Committees;
  • President of Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs from 2000-2001;
  • Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs Board member since 2006.

It is unlikely that Geoff's amateur record will be surpassed or even matched, since modern golfers of his potential, will, no doubt, have turned professional at an early age. "R.I.P Geoff."

Norman Cowburn

Continuing with this sad theme, I inform members of the death of longstanding member and Past Captain, Norman Cowburn, who passed away peacefully at home on Monday 13th February. Norman, who had been a member for 57 years reached the grand age of 97. "R.I.P. Norman."

Keeping you posted.

Hon. Secretary

Winter Cup League

Our Saturday morning`s Winter League held the mid-term dinner at LGC on Saturday 4th February for 32 Members and wives to have a nine-choice, three-course dinner which included steaks and salmon. A wonderful dinner was had by one and all!

Arrangements had been made for Gavin to act as chef but when he found he had double-booked himself, plans were adjusted for him to carry out the basic preparation but for Jayne Andrews to take control in the kitchen on the night, ably assisted by Jade and Caroline.

Everything flowed along without a hitch, with no complaints whatever; with comments from the Members that they had not known a better meal at the club. All the courses were beautifully presented, all the plates and food were hot.

We all had an excellent night and everyone remained at the Club long after the meal was finished, drinking the night away.

My thanks go out to Mike Andrews and Jayne as well as to Peter and the whole House Team who made the night such a success.

There are only 6 more Saturdays to go before our Winter League ends and things are beginning to hot up at the top of the table.

Brian Cockersole and Stuart Eccleston are joint leaders with an excellent average of 36 points closely followed by Syd Birch 35.2, David Smith 35.1 and Rob Brunt 34.6. It looks as if we could have an exciting end to the season.
