Sue Turner Trophy Winner - Leann Nixon

LeannSue turner was a Staffordshire County Golfer and Welsh International. She died of breast cancer at the age of 50. As a legacy to her, the County Ladies play in a 4bbb competition every April and the monies generated are put towards a development weekend for the Staffordshire county girls.

2016 was our 3rd weekend away where the girls play at Henllys Hall and Bull Bay on Anglesey. Each of these courses are used for different reasons. Henllys as the golf director - Peter Maton is a friend of Julie Brown, who was a previous player at Leek Birchall and Peter being assistant pro and member at Leek Birchall. Bull Bay as Sue Turner learnt her golf there and her father, now 90 years of age is still a member at Bull Bay.

The girls are selected as having represented the county through the year in friendly or league matches and also have attended the county training at 3 hammers complex in Wolverhampton.

The coaches in particular Rob Bluck oversea the weekend and Julie Brown - County Junior Organiser and Mandy Ambert - Team Match Manager also attended.

The girls play stableford competition on both days and are advised and encouraged by Rob, Julie and Mandy.

The girls' camaraderie and team spirit has greatly contributed to their success during the past 2 years as they remain undefeated in the Midlands North Scratch league.

This year, Leann Nixon won the overall Turner trophy and played brilliantly. During the final presentation Rob Bluck introduced Leann as the 'wild thing'.

Congratulations to Leann and to all the girls who participated.

George Mountford Trophy - Rearranged

Due to heavy rain causing the course to be closed for a period on Sunday morning the George Mountford Trophy has been rescheduled for Sunday 23rd October. Tee times have largely remained the same, if you wish to play and weren't down for the original competition spaces are still available in the morning and afternoon.

Lady Captain V Lady Vice Captain Competition

Last week the annual Lady Captain v Lady Vice Captain competition was held. 34 ladies competed and were treated to drinks and cakes afterwards which were provided by Lady Captain Pat Beeson and Lady Vice Captain Jennie Flower.

As the matches finished and the cards came in, the tension was like that of this year's Ryder Cup! Winners on the day were the Vice Captains team. Congratulations to all who took part, it was a great day.

Is Golf Keeping You Alive?

The Daily Telegraph - Thursday 6th October 2016

'Above Par Playing golf can add years to your lifespan.'

"People who play golf can add five years to their lives, a study has found. The sport helps to prevent 40 chronic diseases such as diabetes, breast and colon cancer.

Balance and muscle endurance in older people are improved by playing golf and it is also likely to improve cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic health.

Golfing could also help those who suffer heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer and stroke, as well as helping to reduce the risk of anxiety, depression and dementia, researchers at the University of Edinburgh found."

Happy Golfing.
