STAFFORDSHIRE LADIES COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 2014 MOTHER V DAUGHTER IN STAFFS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Leek Golf Club proudly staged the 87th Staffordshire County Championship last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This competition saw top golfers taking part from Clubs throughout the county. On the Friday ladies played 36 holes of scratch golf and then from Saturday onwards the competition went to a knockout basis. In the final was mother and daughter Julie Brown and Emily Coleman. This is the first time in the competitions history that a mother and daughter had ever reached the final. Julie was a professional on the ladies tour and spent her formative years as a member of Leek Golf Club. The final played in the most horrendous weather, was a very closely-fought event with Emily sinking an amazing putt on the 18th green to win the Championship. Leek Golf Club must take tremendous pride in the way that the event was staged, especially as the weather for the three days could not have been any worse. The course was in excellent condition and the green staff led by Martin Wootton were on hand on every green in the semi-finals and finals to take away any surplus water. Leek Golf Club were praised by everyone for their generous hospitality. Around about seventy spectators followed the final around the course. The picture enclosed shows Julie and Emily receiving their trophies from Simon Green the sales executive from the Drayton Group of Mercedes- Benz who were the main sponsors of the Championship.

It was fantastic to see so many members turning out to watch some brilliant golf and supporting the Staffordshire Ladies: even better was to see the youngsters turning out to show just how interested they are. Above is a picture of Charlie Kimberley with the winner Emily.

"KEEPING YOU POSTED"

Starter's Seat: You may have noticed the new "Starter's Seat" on the first tee, which has been donated to the club in memory of Martyn Stevenson who tragically died whilst playing the course on 5th March 2011. We trust members agree that it is a fitting memorial to a much-valued member of Leek Golf Club. Many thanks to Martin's longstanding friend, Dave Allen, for the initial idea, and processing the project.

Membership Levels - There is no doubt that a valued feature of membership at Leek Golf Club is the availability of the course for social golf without the need to pre-book a start time. Of course this is facilitated by our exceptional course design which provides four convenient starting points, but it is also dependent on managing demand.

There seems to be an increasing number of occasions, particularly at weekends, when the course is not readily available to members. In response to members' concerns, the management committee will be reviewing membership levels in all categories to establish if it would be appropriate to introduce a cap on membership. Also how to minimise the financial effects of such an approach if adopted will be studied. In the meantime the introduction of a waiting list for full male membership is being considered to protect the current position.

Staffordshire Ladies County Championship
This prestigious event was hosted by us on Friday 9th May to Sunday 11th. The winner and new Staffordshire Lady Champion is Emily Coleman of Trentham who beat her mother Julie Brown by sinking a twelve foot put on 18th green. Well done to Emily and congratulations to Julie not only for a successful championship but also for her recent achievement of becoming the youngest English Senior Women's Amateur Champion. This is the first time that mother and daughter have competed in the final of the Staffordshire Championship. Some of you older members will remember Julie as a very successful junior member here at Leek.

The weather over the weekend was dreadful which oddly enabled us to enhance the high esteem in which we are already held in golfing circles, since despite the adversity we were seen to step up to the plate and see the event through to a successful conclusion. The county officials were glowing in their praise for our organisation, hospitality and the exceptional commitment of our greens staff who on the final round swept away the water from each individual green prior to putting.

Well done everyone!

Buggy Store: Following the success of the additional trolley store your Committee has now received a request for the provision of an on-site buggy store. This is being given serious consideration on the basis that such an amenity will need to be self-financing and include the cost of battery charging facilities. The annual cost to those making use of the store will depend on demand and therefore members are invited to register any interest with the Secretary's Office.

Staying Connected: Are you sure your contact details are up to date? If in doubt just email a test message to: enquiries@leekgolfclub.co.uk

If there is an issue that you think needs addressing feel free to get back to me. Best wishes and please stay connected.

PRO / CAPTAIN CHALLENGE MATCH

The battle lines were drawn some time last week when The Captain Dave Gallimore lost to Brian Baggaley / Trevor Eccleston in the Captain vs Vice Captain's match. The confidence that now oozed from Brian following his monumental win, led to him and his soul mate (Roy Morris) to issue one of the biggest challenges in his golfing life - a 4BBB match against the Professional and the Captain all in aid of Charity. Brian was to receive 12 shots whilst Roy would receive 14 shots.

The first blood was drawn when The Captain birdied the 1st to go 1 up. The second was halved and the 3rd saw a birdie 3 from the Pro to make it 2up. Brian and the Captain missed the 4th to the right of the green but both played great chips to earn their par 3s. With the shot for Brian this reduced the deficit to 1 up after 4. The 5th was halved and the game was now settling down after the early skirmishes. Standing on the 6th tee the Captain was about to play "out of turn" forgetting his opponents had won the 4th hole with a 3 nett 2. "Now we do have certain standards here at LGC that we expect to be..............." came the comments from our opponents. Dave, at this time, had removed his hearing aid and failed to respond to the request so then Brian and Roy simultaneously went into a serious coughing fit, he was wondering what was happening! The Professional dutifully and politely informed his red faced playing partner that it was not his turn to play and that he should allow Brian to tee off.

CAPTAIN'S COMMENT

In all of these matches I always ask our opponents to nominate their "shot of the day" and Greg's 230 yard rescue to the centre of the 6th was the first nomination of the day. By the end of the round it was very difficult for the panel to decide a clear winner. Greg's golf went from very very good to almost "unbelievable" as Chris Kamara would say.

The Pro won the 6th with a steady birdie and when Roy left a tiddler short on the 7th to get one back the score remained at 2 up after 7.

The 8th saw a second nomination for the "shot of the day" from Greg when he pulled off an amazing low running hook from out of the left hand trees to run over the back of the green. "We thought that he could get hurt trying that shot because the ball was so close to the trees". A good up and down provided another win for the Pro / Captain pairing. Salt was about to be rubbed into Brian's wounds when the Captain's 5 iron tee shot landed very close to the pin. Brian missed right but played his chip to 6 inches to get him onto the list of nominations for the shot of the day. It was only enough to secure a half because the Captain tapped his in for a birdie 2. Match score Pro / Capt. 4 up at the half way point.

Greg's second shot into 10 saw him "endangering public life" when he miscalculated and ended up on the 7th green. Although a 5 was good enough from the Captain to secure a half Greg then played a "Phil Mickleson lob wedge" to 12 feet and holed it for yet another birdie to move 5 up. On the 11th tee the Captain then tried to console his opponents by saying "This was definitely our best performance so far in this series of matches. It is great to watch isn't it? He was met with one smirk (Brian) and one grin (Roy) and 2 minutes of silence!

The 11th was halved in par and the 12th saw the match near its conclusion when Greg rolled in a putt from at least 30 feet. With the 13th hole halved hands were shaken and congratulations were in order of the day.

Although the match was over we decided to "play in". This gave Greg a couple of opportunities to pass on some tips and advice to his playing partners. "We all enjoyed the experience of playing with the Professional but when he is playing like that it was a privilege to watch" said the Captain. On the 15th Greg played his final shot to try and win the "shot of the day". He was some 160 yards away in the trees on the left. I thought that he may try to hit a low running hook like he had on the 8th but even if it came off he would only be able to make the right hand bunker short of the green. None of us could envisage the shot that he almost pulled off. "It was the biggest hook that I had ever seen. The ball ran up the full length of the 15th green and just rolled off the back of it. Amazing shot but not enough to get his par 4 so the result this week of "the shots of the day" went to Brian's up and down on the 4th to win the hole and Brian's up and down on the 9th for the half".

If anyone would like to support this year's Captain's Charity by participating in the Pro / Captain's Challenge please just pop in the Pro's shop and arrange a date with Jake. I am confident that you will enjoy the experience.

"STOTTY" STARS FOR STAFFORDSHIRE SENIORS IN DEBUT MATCH

On Friday LGC had 3 of its players representing the County team in the first ever Inter Counties League match. Club Captain Dave Gallimore (h'cap 4), Dunc Stott (h'cap 1) and Ross Martin (h'cap 4) were selected to play in both the mornings Greensomes and the afternoons 4BBB at Wolstanton Golf Club. All of these matches are played off scratch and teams are made up of 12 players from all over the County.

Dunc and Ross were paired together for the Greensomes and it proved to be a very successful pairing running out winners by a 2 & 1 margin. Dave was paired with the County's Senior Captain (Tony Wright from Little Aston) and only managed a half when their opponents holed out for a birdie 3 from off the green at the last. Staffordshire had a 4 / 2 lead to take into the afternoon fourballs. The afternoon saw some changes to the pairings and Dunc was once again successful playing with Glenn McBryde from Stone GC winning 7 & 6. Dave won his match just as convincingly by 6 & 5 playing with Mark Ashton from Ingestre GC but unfortunately Ross lost in his afternoon match. Congratulations to Dunc Stott on achieving the maximum 3 points on his debut! Match score Staffordshire 12 Derbyshire 6.

All three players have now been selected to play a Herefordshire Team on Monday at Market Drayton GC where it is hoped that they can increase their points tally and keep Staffordshire Seniors at the top of this newly formed Inter Counties League.

SECOND TEAM RESULT

Leek second team played their third game of the season, but their first away from home, and came away with a creditable six-all score against a powerful Brookfield outfit.

Brookfield have recently been strengthened by a massive injection of new members, as a result of Gorsty Hill's demise last year.

Captain Mark Shea brought in Zulf Khalifa and Rob Taylor to replace John Moss and Ross Martin from the previous game, and the pairings scored as follows:

Rob Taylor & Rob Thompson-Lost
Mark Shea and Bomber Lancaster-Lost
Andy Baxter & Paul Brass-Lost
Andy Tooth & James Hutchinson-Won
Rich Cordon & Zulf Khalifa-Won
Peter Cordon &Dennis Vincent-Won

Mark admitted that he would have taken this score before the game started, and hoped to keep a strong squad to maximise the points haul for the next game at home against Onneley on 24th May.

Save yourself time and money, go lithium!

Sure, a lithium trolley battery may cost a little more than its lead acid alternative; but Motocaddy lithium lasts five times longer, is a fraction of the weight and recharges much faster. For trolley power, it pays to play the long game.
