"THE HARRY BRINDLEY 1ST BIRTHDAY"

CAPTAIN V VICE CAPTAIN MATCH

Last Saturday the above fixture took place with a special emphasis on the true meaning of golf membership at Leek Golf Club. Dave Gallimore (Club Captain) and Trevor Eccleston (Vice Captain) assembled two teams to provide a friendly 4BBB Challenge match where the result was to be of secondary importance. The objective for the Captain was to provide an enjoyable experience for all of the players to share and to take some time out to admire some of the traditions that LGC have to offer. "For me personally this is a special day because Trevor has supported the idea of playing a game of friendly golf with our friends whilst remembering some of the more important things that are going on around us. Over the last 12 months a good friend of ours and Past Captain Tony Brindley has had to endure the emotional difficulties associated with the poor health of his grandson Harry who in the first 12 months of his life has had to undergo a series of 5 lifesaving heart operations. These problems not only affected his son Richard and his wife Tracy but also Tony's wife Gerry. I also know that it is impossible for anyone to imagine how they would cope with the similar situation of the child if it was one of their own. So gentlemen, it is days like this where we gather and socialise with one another and we have the opportunity to continue to offer support to our fellow members who have needed it over the last 12 months. You may know others who have needed someone to talk to and have a chat with recently. You may know someone who was unable to play golf for whatever reason and just fancied a pot of tea and a tea cake. These days are precious and we will all look on them differently but for me I really value what the gentlemen members of LGC are able to offer each other off the golf course as well as on it. Thank you and I hope that we can meet regularly throughout the season during the Captain's Friendly Matches and maintain the traditional values LGC have to offer".

The match score was a win for the Captain's side by 5 matches to 3.

STAFFORDSHIRE SENIORS V CHESHIRE SENIORS

Last Tuesday LGC provided the County Seniors Team with 2 players for their match at Davenport Golf Club near Poynton in Cheshire. Club Captain Dave Gallimore was making his debut at this level whilst Ross Martin had played several times over the last 2 seasons. The morning followed a Greensome format which Ross Martin won comfortably but unfortunately Dave lost his match on the last green. The afternoon format changed to a 4BBB and the Staffordshire team was looking to gain an unlikely draw with just 2 matches left on the course. Dave and his partner (Martyn Pearce from Uttoxeter GC) were in pole position at 2 up with 4 holes to play but their opponents found birdies at the 16th from 25 feet and at the 18th from 30 feet to halve the match. "I felt as if I have been mugged" said the Club Captain. Ross was disappointed not to add to his tally of points but was satisfied with his personal performance on the day.

For those of you who are friends with the former Leek member and former British Amateur Champion Duncan Evans I just want to let you know that he is playing for Cheshire Seniors off a handicap of +2. Duncan won his morning match and halved in the afternoon and wishes to be remembered to you all.

Cheshire are one of the stronger County Teams and a 11-7 defeat was a very creditable performance considering Staffordshire were fielding 3 newcomers.

The next match will be on Friday at Wolstanton GC against Hereford and Worcester and it will be Dunc Stott's turn to make his first appearance for the Staffs Seniors. Dave and Ross have also been selected and I hope that you will join me in wishing them good luck.

1st TEAM MATCH V WOLSTANTON

On Saturday Leek Golf Club 1st Team played their first game of the season against a strong Wolstanton team. An excellent performance by an inexperienced Leek side produced a fine 7 - 5 win. The results were as follows:

Warren Alcock/Jim Willshaw - match won
Chris Flavell/Ross Martin - match won
Ross Salmon/Rob Furmston - match won
Mark Shea/Richard Cordon - match halved
Dennis Vincent/Dave Alcock - match lost
Luke Brass/Dan Bourne - match lost

This is my final match as team captain. I would like to thank everyone who has played for the 1st team over the past year. Greg Rogula has kindly offered to take over for the remainder of the season and I would like to thank him for stepping in at short notice.

Course management made easy

If doing your yardages involves a cursory gaze towards the 150-yard marker - and then wondering on your backswing if that's to the front or the centre of the green - then it's high time you considered a distance measuring device.
