Hello golfers,
Leek Golf Club Pro-Am
On Friday 1st July, Leek held its annual pro-am. Once again, the event was exceptionally well supported from both Members and Visitors alike. The field consisted of 43 teams which is the biggest pro-am field so far this year in the Midlands and will be one of the biggest of the whole year.
Amateurs compete alongside a professional for the team prizes, while the Professionals battle it out for a prize fund of over £5,000. Once again, the course played tough and even with the receptive greens, the Professionals found scoring tough, especially in the afternoon when the wind picked up. The winning score of 69 (-1) was from James Whatley of Morley Hayes whose round consisted of 5 birdies, 2 bogeys and 1 double bogey which was good enough to claim the £750 1st prize. One of his birdies was significantly on the 18th Hole as he edged out Richard O'Hanlon (St Kew), Paul Streeter (Lincoln), Simon Lilly (Golfers Choice), Stuart Davis (Ormonde Fields) and Richard Smith (Trentham) who all finished in a tie for 2nd place, each winning £470.
When it comes to big events such as this, they wouldn't be possible without people giving up their time and effort to ensure the day is successful. A massive thank you has to go to our 3 main sponsors Quality Golf Destinations, Molson Coors and KMF. Also, thanks go to the 9 Hole Sponsors Logo Shack, Strata, Breeze House, Newbold Opticians, Service Metal (Midlands), ACL, Browns Waste Management & Hunters Estate Agents as without your support, the event would not be possible. Apart from the sponsors, we also had 28 teams entered consisting of members and visitors and you all contributed to making the Leek Pro-Am such a huge fixture on the Midlands PGA calendar.
Special thanks must also go to Dave & Jackie Gallimore who gave up their day to greet players on the 1st tee and take the sweep money. Also, thanks go to Clare Robinson and Carole Nixon who looked after every team half-way round at the millennium pavilion with food and drink.
The bar and kitchen staff once again worked tirelessly throughout the day from bacon baps at 7am, to evening meals at 9pm and drinks into the night. Thanks go to Chef John Challinor, kitchen staff; Bar Manager Peter Cordon and bar staff as without all of your hard work, the day would not run as smoothly as it does.
A special thank you must also go to John Turner and his green staff who worked exceptionally hard to present the course in magnificent condition in what can only be described as awful conditions in the lead up to the event.A special thank you must also go to John Turner and his green staff who worked exceptionally hard to present the course in magnificent condition in what can only be described as awful conditions in the lead up to the event.
After another successful year, we will shortly be confirming a date for the 2017 Pro-Am and would like to push on again from this year to make the event the biggest Pro-Am in the Midlands. If you are unsure whether you would enjoy it or not, I'm sure if you speak to anyone who has played in the event, they will tell you how they thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Is it the 'Big Three' or the 'Big Four'?
Just when you thought Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy were all set to divvy up golf's biggest prizes, along comes big-hitting Dustin Johnson. The US champion is now number two in the world and looks to be finally fulfilling his potential after another fine win at the weekend - and a big one too at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. For years Johnson seemed destined to be the bridesmaid, now he's one of the favourites to go back-to-back in Majors and take the Claret Jug back across the Atlantic.
Next week's Open at Royal Troon could be a classic
