Hello golfers,

Course news

Course Report - John Turner

Firstly I would like to welcome back Sam Bostock to the Greens` staff. We had considerable interest in his position and his re-introduction hopefully shows how much respect I have for this young man. I see him as a major asset not just at this moment but to the Club in the future.

It's been a great start to the year so far and we are trying our utmost to address on-going issues that have come to the Greens Committee`s attention. I have introduced different cutting practices to improve presentation and make the course a more enjoyable experience. This approach won't suit everyone or indeed every handicap. It`s not my intention to make the course really easy, just hopefully a little more inviting to members and visitors alike.

Our plan moving forward is to pay more attention to the general housekeeping of the course, paths/steps weeds etc. We plan to have a tree management document drawn up this summer so that I can swing swiftly into action around October with the full support of the Club. For further tree/shrub management, my remit is to reduce shade to greens and tees where possible and allow air flow. The 2nd green has already improved dramatically so that I now only have to work on grass cover on the upper section but I am really pleased with its improvement. I am fully aware the banking to the rear of the green is still somewhat untidy and requires further attention.

We will of course deal with this area on an ongoing basis! This area was a huge programme of works, all undertaken in-house. I would also like to look at the heather management of the course and will welcome the input of member Joe Smith with the intention of re-instating areas that will improve the visual impact. I would like to try and organise a divot party. It would be fantastic to get a large group together which we could combine with a Members` course walk and chat. I will make myself available for any members who would like to come to express their views and hopefully we can return a few divots along the way. We are due our second visit from the STRI on 10th June. Mr Alistair Beggs is just finding his feet at Leek but was impressed with the course in general on his first visit. I hope everyone had a chance to read his report.

June is a busy month for competitions so my focus is to give members a course you find fair and enjoyable. Please be aware that the Greens` staff have a busy few months ahead. Golfers hitting balls towards them is not just dangerous but disrespectful, please allow us to do our job in a safe manner.

I know it must be infuriating with mowers flying about or waiting with staff ahead of you when you just want an enjoyable round of golf but all staff are instructed to be courteous to the playing environment, e.g. be more sensitive around greens and during competitions. However our Course Policy states that Greens staff have priority on the course.

Finally a huge Thank-you for all the very positive support and feedback I have received during this period of management re-structuring. It's given myself and the staff a huge boost!

9 Hole Qualifing Competitions

Unable to play 18 holes, not enough time, finding it physically difficult, unable to fit in 3 comps to retain Competition Handicap? 9 Hole Comps may be the answer!

The Club now have 3 x 9 Hole Courses registered with England Golf off White(SSS 68), Yellow(SSS 67) and Red(SSS 71) Blocks These enable Handicap Qualifying Comps to be played over holes 1-9 from any of the Blocks. That is 3 x 18 Holes, 6 x 9 Holes, or any combination totalling 54 Holes played throughout the year and means that you retain your H/cap for the next year.

The Ladies have been successfully running 9 Hole Comps all year. The Men's Section will be running 9 Hole Comps during all future Mid-Week Comps, and eventually Weekend Comps if they prove popular. They will all be Stableford format and initially only ONE Division. Depending on uptake, we may introduce normal Divisions later. Special scorecards will be used and any blocks can be chosen, even Red.

England Golf are hoping that this initiative will encourage older Members to retain a competitive interest and prolong their enjoyment of the Game.
